Honest Compliments

KieraRowonna2As I hurried to get ready for work the other morning, I grabbed my jeans and slipped them on. Kiera was sitting on the bed, completely ready, just waiting on me. I snagged my earrings from my jewelry box and turned to face her.

“Mommy! You look fabulous!” she exclaimed. “Your front looks amazing! Turn around so I can see the back too.”

I grinned as I turned around to model for my little fashionista.

“I love those pants!” she continued raving to me.

I made a complete turn and faced her. I was ready to face the day. There’s nothing like a compliment to make you feel prepared to tackle the world, right?

Aaron walked in the bedroom and I smiled at him as Kiera continued, “I love her pants, Daddy!”

Now, let me just mention that I have had these same jeans for a good couple of months now. On top of that, I wear these jeans on a regular basis. The child has seen them before. But, hey… she was laying on the compliments. Who am I to remind her that she has seen them before?

Let’s go back to my warm and fuzzy feelings. I was still smiling as I leaned down and picked up my tennis shoes. As I turned to sit on the bed, my sweet, little Kiera said, “They make you look younger.”

They. Make. Me. Look. Younger.

I quietly cleared my throat. “Well, thank you, baby,” I responded.

I heard Aaron snicker as he quickly turned on his heel and headed out of the room.

Today, it was my turn to snicker at Aaron. We are currently on a level playing field.

Aaron’s glasses are beginning to wear out so he pulled out his spare glasses and put them on. Kiera was once again, perched on the bed, waiting for the adults to get ready.

“How do they look?” he asked me.

“They look good. Are they going to bother you?” I asked. His old glasses are… bifocals. His newest pair are transitional lenses. That little bit of information will come into play in a moment.

“No. I think I will be ok until I can order a new pair,” he answered as he sat on the bed. “Come over to this side, Kiera and let me put your shoes on.”

Kiera rolled onto her back and lay in front of Aaron. She studied his glasses for a minute and then said to him, “You look like you’re younger than you look.”

I stifled the snicker that wanted to erupt from me.

She continued on, “I see two scratches in your glasses though.”

Aaron gently smiled at her and explained, “Well, they are called bifocals. They are like a magnifying glass so that it can help me see easier.”

There was a brief pause as Kiera processed that information. Then my innocent little girl said, “Well, I think you need the easy glasses since you’re old and can’t see.”

And that was it for me. I snickered loudly and left the room quickly before I found a pillow being lobbed at me.

I absolutely love the things that come out of her mouth. Even when she is implying that we are old!
