WEEK 10 GRIDIRON GLIMPSE: Several local teams closing in on playoff berths, district titles

Zephyr’s Quayde Heard (10) and the Bulldogs to secure no worse than a share of the District 13-A Division II championship with a win over Sidney Friday

Sidney (2-7, 0-3) at Zephyr (7-2, 2-0)

7:30 p.m. Friday

The Zephyr Bulldogs can ensure no worse than a share of their fourth consecutive district championship with a victory over the Sidney Eagles, who are still seeking their first victory against a varsity squad, in Friday’s home finale.

Zephyr is coming off a 30-20 victory at Blanket Saturday, a game in which the Bulldogs came out on top despite being outgained in total yardage, 281-231.

The Bulldogs put forth a balanced attack the featured 116 rushing yards and 115 passing yards. Chayden Woodcock led the ground game with 85 yards and a touchdown, while Quayde Heard completed 5 of 7 passes for 107 yards and three touchdowns – a pair to Bauer Blair, which finished with 48 yards receiving on his two grabs, and one to Jetson Gowin, who pulled down two receptions for 46 yards.

Sidney suffered a narrow 18-12 loss to Rising Star this past Thursday, the Eagles closest brush with victory against a varsity team in 2025.

Back on Oct. 2, the Eagles defeated the Jonesboro JV, 58-6, as Ethan Scantling rushed for 87 yards and two touchdowns of 17 and 53 yards, while Josh Heath finished with 71 rushing yards and reached the end zone twice from 49 and 10 yards out, and Rees Miller chipped in 61 yards on the ground and a pair of scores from 37 and 26 yards.

Weston Bunting returned an interception 47 yards for a touchdown, while Ryan Crawford tacked on a 26-yard fumble return for a touchdown.

According to sixmanfootball.com, Zephyr is a 45-point favorite, while Dave Campbell’s Texas Football lists the Bulldogs as 44-point favorites.

Lometa (4-4, 0-1) at May (7-1, 1-0)

7:30 p.m. Friday

The May Tigers look to continue their march toward their first district championship since 2021 as they welcome the Lometa Hornets Friday.

May is coming off a 52-0 victory over Santa Anna in its league opener, while Lometa is looking to bounce back from a 74-49 loss to Jonesboro.

In the Tigers’ victory over Santa Anna, offensive standouts included Lane Goodson with 25 yards rushing and a touchdown, 33 yards receiving and a touchdown, and a punt return for a touchdown; Cayson Dail with 56 yards passing and two scoring tosses; Kobey Morris with 18 rushing yards and a score; Jackson Lusk with 12 yards rushing and a touchdown, and 20 receiving yards; Kayden Psencik with 16 rushing yards and a trip to the end zone; Mikey Scheriger with 22 rushing yards and 12 passing yards; and Brody Stice with a 3-yard touchdown reception.

Defensively for the Tigers, Goodson tallied six tackles followed by Psencik with five tackles and a fumble recovery, Scheriger with three tackles and an interception, Kaden Watkins with three tackles, Morris with two tackles and a fumble recovery, and Lusk with two tackles.’

Lometa started the season with three victories in their first four outings, but have since lost three out of the last four. The lone common opponent for the two teams is Richland Springs, which defeated Lometa 59-14, and May 42-14.

Hornets to watch include Jeremiah Torres, Emmanuel Prado, Stone Carr-Jones, Roy Carr, Pablo Carbajal, Easton Hamilton, and Carson Brister.

According to sixmanfootball.com, May is a 45-point favorite, while Dave Campbell’s Texas Football lists the Tigers as 45-point favorites.

Lohn (3-5, 0-2) at Brookesmith (3-6, 0-3)

7:30 p.m. Friday

Both the Brookesmith Mustangs and Lohn Eagles are targeting their first District 15-A Division II victories Friday night.

Brookesmith, which is coming off its district bye, has fallen to Richland Springs (69-0), Panther Creek (73-28) and Rochelle (42-0) in league action, while Lohn has been defeated by Panther Creek (49-7) and Rochelle (61-7)

The last victory for the Mustangs was Oct. 3 when they rallied from an eight-point halftime deficit for a 54-44 road win over Olfen.

In that game, Brookesmith rushed for 267 yards behind Addy Heard’s 214-yard, four-touchdown effort. Jase Julien chipped in three receptions for 45 yards and a touchdown, along with 34 rushing yards and two more scores. Austin Loyd passed for 45 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 15 yards, and Blake Loyd scored on a 2-yard carry.

Defensively for Brookesmith, Aryn Ribble registered six tackles trailed by five each from Heard and Robert Eachus, four from Julien, and three each from Austin Loyd and Travis Jarvis.

Players to watch for Lohn include Dallas Keller, Kadin Reeves, Connor Nuncio, Sergio Sandoval, and Abel Salas.

According to sixmanfootball.com, Brookesmith is a 26-point favorite, while Dave Campbell’s Texas Football lists the Mustangs as 15-point favorites.

Comanche (3-5, 0-3) at San Angelo TLCA (0-8, 0-3)

7 p.m. Friday

The Comanche Indians’ playoff chances were dealt a major blow with last week’s 26-22 loss to Breckenridge, as the team continues to focus on achieving its first District 3-3A Division I victory of the season on Friday’s trip to San Angelo TCLA.

The loss to Breckenridge started with Comanche falling behind 12-0 Friday night before a weather delay, as the Indians were unable to pull off the come-from-behind victory Saturday afternoon.

The Indians finished with 235 yards of total offense – 163 passing and 72 rushing – but committed four turnovers.

Cooper Welch completed 7 of 13 passes for 163 yards but was picked off four times. CT Buford caught four passes for 89 yards, Dallas Gillette made a 55-yard reception, and Fernando Patino tallied a 22-yard grab.

On the ground, Ladanian Smith rushed for 51 yards and a touchdown and Zaden Tello tacked on 13 yards and a score.

Defensively, Buford intercepted three passes and returned one for a touchdown, while Adrian Reyes compiled 21 tackles, Adrian Reyes tallied 14, and Elijah Ozuna finished with 10 tackles.

San Angelo TLCA’s three district losses have come against Sweetwater (69-0), Clyde (62-14) and Jim Ned (50-0). TLCA has been outscored this season 382-62.

Players to watch for TLCA are Ashton Ortiz, Chris Rangel, Matthew Mata, and Joseph Luna.

According to Harris Ratings Weekly, Comanche is a 34-point favorite, while Dave Campbell’s Texas Football lists the Indians as 34-point favorites.

Ballinger (3-5, 0-3) at Coleman (1-7, 0-3)

7 p.m. Friday

A 21-point lead slipped away from the Coleman Bluecats, who again were denied their first District 5-2A Division I victory by Hico, 28-27. The Ballinger Bearcats, meanwhile, are also looking to end their district victory drought in 2025.

Against Hico last week, the Bluecats finished with 194 yards of total offense – 120 passing and 74 rushing – with no turnovers.

Hunter Edington completed 6 of 11 passes for 120 yards with two touchdowns of 70 yards and 26 yards, both to Jayden Smith, but Coleman failed to convert an extra point after one of the touchdowns that proved to be the difference on the scoreboard.

Brayden Torres rushed for 44 yards and a 9-yard touchdown, while Paul Salas chipped in 30 yards on the ground and also scored from 20 yards out after Darren Hurtado blocked a punt to result in the first points of the contest.

Defensively for the Bluecats, Micah Lackey tallied 17 tackles to lead the team trailed by 12 from Lane Bowers, 10 from Torres, nine from Hurtado, and seven tackles from Kyle Chambers.

Players to watch for Ballinger include OL/DL Drew Knickerbocker, WR/DB Manny Gonzalez, QB/DE Kyson Burleson, WR/DB Hunter Kresta, TE/DL Landon Cornutt, WR/LB Dylan Page, OL/DL Josh Martinez, RB/LB Pierson Nord, and WR/DB Coleman King.

According to Harris Ratings Weekly, Coleman is a 14-point favorite, while Dave Campbell’s Texas Football lists the Bluecats as 18-point favorites.

Holland (1-7, 0-3) at San Saba (5-3, 2-1)

7 p.m. Friday

The San Saba Armadillos bounced back from their first District 14-A Division I defeat and remained in the thick of both the playoff and district championship race in the league thanks to last year’s 42-7 triumph over Harper. The Holland Hornets are next on the slate, who are looking to end a four-game losing streak.

Against Harper last week, San Saba amassed 427 yards of total offense, with 411 yards coming on the ground.

Luke Tharp led the charge with 219 rushing yards and two touchdowns while Jason Everett chipped in 112 yards on the ground and also scored twice. Enrique Mendoza added 43 yards and a rushing touchdown and Graden Lebow finished with 7 yards and crossed the goal line once.

Through the air, JJ Romero completed both of his pass attempts for 16 yards to Danny English.

Defensively for the Armadillos, Kaylub Roberts registered 13 tackles with six for loss, followed by 11 with four behind the line of scrimmage from Clayton Meador, and eight tackles each from Lebow and Melvin Umble.

Holland’s three district games thus far has been losses to Mason (51-0), Johnson City (49-28) and Harper (27-12).

Players to watch for the Hornets include LB Mason Chaney, WR Chance Harvey, OL Derek Busby, RB Hunter Mariante, OL Gunner Camden, and QB Gavin Brummett.

According to Harris Ratings Weekly, San Saba is a 28-point favorite, while Dave Campbell’s Texas Football lists the Armadillos as 25-point favorites.

Hamlin (7-1, 3-0) at Cross Plains (3-5, 1-2)

7 p.m. Friday

Facing their second District 7-2A Division II co-leader in as many weeks, the Cross Plains Buffaloes are eyeing an upset and a chance to cement their playoff position Friday against the Hamlin Pied Pipers.

Cross Plains is coming off a 42-0 loss to Albany in which the Buffaloes mustered just 147 yards of total offense – 94 rushing and 53 passing – with three turnovers, while allowing 339 yards – 189 through the air and 150 on the ground – without a takeaway.

Tyler Mackey rushed for 51 yards and a caught a 26-yard pass, Landry Savell passed for 53 yards and rushed for 36 yards, Kye Schuman chipped in 25 yards on the ground, and Rylen Reed and Colter Wedeking caught passes of 16 and 11 yards, respectively, for the Buffaloes.

Defensively, Schuman tallied seven tackles followed by Reed and Brody Harris with six apiece, and Anson Long with five tackles.

Hamlin has not lost since dropping the season opener to Anson (49-6) and carries a seven-game win streak into the contest.

Pied Pipers to watch include quarterback Isaiah Hutchings (689 passing yards, 7 TDs, 2 INTs), running back Hudson Smith (643 rushing yards, 6 TDs), and receiver Luke White (19-468, 6 TDs).

According to Harris Ratings Weekly, Cross Plains is a 24-point underdog, while Dave Campbell’s Texas Football lists the Buffaloes as 15-point underdogs.

Meridian (1-7, 1-4) at Goldthwaite (5-3, 3-2)

7 p.m. Friday

The Goldthwaite Eagles look to inch closer toward the postseason Friday night as they host the Meridian Yellowjackets, who have lost four games in a row, in their home finale.

Goldthwaite secured a 54-0 victory over Wortham a week ago as the Eagles surrendered just 22 yards of total offense – 15 through the air and 7 on the ground – with one takeaway, while generating 265 yards – 150 passing and 115 rushing.

Blake Howard connected on 7 of 11 passes for 150 yards and four touchdowns while also rushing for 55 yards and another score.

Aidyn Lee pulled down three receptions for 87 yards and a pair of touchdowns, Talen Gardner caught two passes for 39 yards and scored once, Zach Rodriguez nabbed a 13-yard reception, and Casen Wiedebusch caught an 11-yard touchdown.

Wiedebusch also chipped in 22 yards on the ground and another touchdown, Owen Campbell rushed for a pair of scores and 18 yards, and Luke Patrick contributed 19 yards rushing.

Meridian won its district opener over Hubbard (10-6), but has since fallen to Frost (38-14), Bremond (53-0), Wortham (36-0) and Mart (70-0).

Players to watch for the Yellowjackets are DL Gunnar Chandler, LB Garrett Pope, RB Dustin Padgett, OL Bradley Perry, LB Ezekiel Mabry, LB Joshua Nunez, and DL Brandon Allen.

According to Harris Ratings Weekly, Goldthwaite is ranked 65 points higher than Meridian this week, while Dave Campbell’s Texas Football lists the Eagles as 59-point favorites.

Rochelle (3-5, 2-0) at Richland Springs (6-1, 2-0)

7:30 p.m. Friday

In a clash of the two undefeated squads in District 15-A Division II, the No. 3 Richland Springs Coyotes host the Rochelle Hornets with a district title in the balance.

Richland Springs is coming off a 64-6 victory over Panther Creek last week as Cohen Ethridge completed both of his pass attempts for 39 yards and a pair of touchdowns and also caught a 30-yard scoring toss from Ethan Deeds for the Coyotes.

Billy Perry tacked on a 46-yard touchdown rush and completed a 10-yard pass to Layne Ward, while Deeds caught a 36-yard scoring toss and rushed for a 19-yard touchdown as well. Eli Hutchins added a 3-yard touchdown catch.

Defensively, Richland Springs created four takeaways as Rush Norris recovered a pair of fumbles and Ethridge and Deeds each pounced on a loose ball as well. Deeds also recorded a safety, while Perry led the Coyotes with 11 tackles.

After dropping its first five games of the season, Rochelle is on a three-game win streak including district triumphs over Lohn (61-7) and Brookesmith (42-0).

Hornets to keep an eye on include Jayce McCormick, Xavier Mendez, Chris Lopez, Gavin Rodriguez and Coltyn Sohns.

Jonesboro (3-5, 1-0) at Santa Anna (3-5, 0-1)

7:30 p.m. Friday

The Santa Anna Mountaineers look to rebound for a loss in their district opener and remain in the playoff picture as the Jonesboro Eagles come to town.

Santa Anna suffered a 52-0 loss to No. 3 May in its league opener a week ago.

The last victory for Santa Anna took place in the pre-district finale on Oct. 10, a 28-20 double-overtime decision over Woodson.

Against Woodson, the Mountaineers finished with 361 yards of total offense – 196 rushing and 165 passing.

Brock Brown completed 7 of 17 passes for 165 yards with touchdowns of 4 and 58 yards to Jeremiah Davila, who finished with five catches for 123 yards. Kain Watson added a 30-yard reception and Eddie York grabbed a 12-yard pass.

On the ground, Jayden Gibson rushed for 136 yards while Jordan Diggs finished with 30 yards and a 2-yard score and Watson chipped in 22 yards and a 9-yard touchdown.

Defensively, Brown led Santa Anna with 21 tackles followed by nine from Davila, eight from Watson, seven from Tony Blaine, five from Diggs, and three from Gibson. Davila also picked off two passes and Watson and Blaine each recovered a fumble.

Jonesboro defeated Lometa by a 74-49 count in its District 14-A Division I opener last week.


Eagles to keep an eye on include Sam Lawrence, Will Featherston, Paden Martin, Damon Moore, Colton Robertson, Sydnie Smith, Camdyn Christel, and Preston Seager.

Gustine (5-2, 1-1) at Rising Star (4-4, 1-2)

7:30 p.m. Friday

The Rising Star Wildcats picked up their first District 13-A Division II victory last week, and look to play spoiler to the Gustine Tigers, who still have their eyes on a playoff berth.

In Rising Star’s 18-12 win at Sidney last week, the Wildcats were led offensively by Chance Wells, who rushed for 63 yards and a touchdown, caught a 21-yard pass, threw an 8-yard pass, and kicked a 21-yard field goal.

Anthony Pollard finished with 77 yards rushing, 31 yards passing, and a 1-yard catch, while JV Kelly chipped in 46 yards on the ground, two receptions for 10 yards, and a 1-yard pass completion.

Defensive standouts for Rising Star included Leland Schenk with 12 tackles, Pollard with 10, Wells and Kason McGinn with seven each, Kelly with six and a fumble recovery returned for a touchdown, Brayan Lopez with two tackles, and Juakeen Froese with one takedown.

Gustine dropped its district opener to Blanket (57-12) but rebounded against Sidney (64-34) and a win Friday would set up a showdown with Zephyr next week for a potential split of the league championship.

Tigers to watch include Andy Garcia, Alonso Gomez, Anthony Patino, Michael Garcia, and Caleb Newton.

According to sixmanfootball.com, Rising Star is a 10-point underdog, while Dave Campbell’s Texas Football lists the Wildcats as 16-point underdogs.

Cranfills Gap (3-5, 1-1) at Mullin (1-7, 0-2)

7:30 p.m. Friday

The Mullin Bulldogs, coming off their bye week, are seeking their first district victory and to throw a wrench in the plans of the Cranfills Gap Lions, who are chasing a playoff berth.

Mullin’s most recent outing with a 72-68 loss to Evant on Oct. 17 in which the Bulldogs produced 436 yards of total offense – 311 passing and 125 rushing.

Vash Langford completed 15 of 22 attempts for 262 yards with four touchdowns while Mani Morales was 3 of 41 for 41 yards and two more scores. Morales also caught seven passes for 108 yards and scored twice, Jaidan Langford grabbed six receptions for 91 yards and two trips to the end zone, Toby Huhn hauled in two touchdown receptions totaling 67 yards, and Lucas Cook caught a 23-yard touchdown.

On the ground, Aaron Porter led Mullin with 57 yards followed by Vash Langford with 41 yards and a touchdown and Morales with 20 yards and a trip to the end zone.

Defensively, Morales tallied nine tackles and Cook intercepted a pass for Mullin.

Cranfills Gap has defeated Priddy (45-0) with a loss to Oglesby (69-0) in district play, and a victory Friday night would likely set up a showdown with Evant next week for the second and final playoff berth from District 14-A Division II.

Evant (4-4, 2-0) at Priddy (1-7, 0-2)

7:30 p.m. Friday

The Priddy Pirates are in the role of spoiler in District 14-A Division II as they look derail the postseason plans of the Evant Elks.

Priddy’s lone win this season came against the Rocksprings JV (38-28) with losses to Panther Creek (46-0), Trent (57-8), Gustine (48-0), Santa Anna (50-0), Rising Star (forfeit), Cranfills Gap (54-0) and Oglesby (50-0).

Pirates to keep an eye on this year include Shane Ahearn, Brailen Rea and Luis Reyes.

The Elks are led by Texan White (563 rushing yards, 7 TDs; 144 passing yards, 2 TDs; 1-18 receiving), Edgar Dominguez (511 rushing yards, 7 TDs; 2-28 receiving), Octavio Cardosa (426 passing yards, 13 TDs), and Cooper Standford (22-398, 7 TDs receiving).
