Early maintains hold on first place in district with 28-3 victory at Clifton

CLIFTON – The Early Longhorns earned their second District 5-3A Division II victory in as many outings, remaining atop the league standings with a 28-3 triumph over the Clifton Cubs Friday night.

With the win, Early (3-4, 2-0) will next host Brady (5-2, 2-0) – which is coming off a 70-31 victory over Eastland (0-7, 0-2) – at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24 with sole possession of first place on the line in the 5-3A Division II standings, as well as the inside track to the league championship.

Against Clifton (5-2, 1-1) Friday night, the Longhorns churned out 260 yards of total offense – 147 through the air and 113 on the ground – with no turnovers.

Early scored a touchdown in each quarter as Stone Ratliff put the Longhorns on the board with a 10-yard carry in the first period.

In the second quarter, Aiden Driskill caught a 9-yard touchdown pass from Caden Wilson, as the Longhorns led 14-3 at intermission.

Wilson then scored on an 11-yard quarterback keeper in the third quarter, while the fourth period touchdown belonged to Andrew Reedy on a 35-yard reception from Wilson.

Through the air, Wilson completed 11 of 16 passes for 147 yards with the two scoring tosses. Wilson also finished with a team-high 58 yards rushing.

Reedy grabbed a team-best five receptions for 96 yards, Jaxson Stockman pulled down three receptions for 33 yards, Driskill added his 9-yard touchdown, Isaac Ybarra caught a 5-yard pass and Ratliff nabbed a 4-yard catch.

Additionally on the ground, Ybarra rushed for 25 yards, Cameron Love tacked on 21, and Ratliff finished with 9 rushing yards.
