Howard Payne University’s Department of Social work recently took part in Mission Waco’s Poverty Simulation, an experience in which the Social Work Program has participated for nearly 15 years. The immersive experience places students in real-life scenarios where they must navigate difficult choices faced by those living in poverty or facing homelessness.
The group was led by Shantel Oplotnik, assistant professor of social work and program director, and included Ciera Ray, assistant professor of social work; Amara Harris, junior from Brownwood; Lexy Uribe, junior from Crosby; Baylee Burns, sophomore from Krum; Crystal Winn, junior from Brownwood; Aniyah O’Neal, senior from Bay City; and Maya Rivera, senior from Bangs.
“The trip is valuable to our students by providing them with a powerful and eye-opening experience,” Oplotnik. “The simulation helps equip each student for a future career in social work and strengthens their Christian commitment to serving others.”
The trip was a part of the Social Services and Policy in Rural Settings class.
“Visiting Mission Waco was truly an eye-opening experience that showed me resources are available, but not always accessible,” said Winn.
Mission Waco creates a safe, controlled weekend of experiences that is designed to increase empathy for those living in poverty in America.
“This experience opened my eyes to the privileges I take for granted and helped me grow in empathy and compassion to better serve others,” said Uribe.
