H. W. Wood

Horace Weldon “H.W.” Wood, age 86, of Menard, Texas, entered eternal rest Saturday, August 9, 2025, at his home, surrounded by family. H.W., as he was known to most, was born on September 6, 1938, in Post, Texas, to Henry Lafayette Wood and Ellen Margarene (Mixon) Wood. He grew up in Lamesa and graduated from Lamesa High School in 1957. In his high school years, he broke horses with his brothers for their dad’s business. He married Betty Lou Dyess on June 2, 1958, in Lamesa. H.W. was active in his community while in Lamesa; He worked as a firefighter and firetruck driver for Lamesa Fire Department for several years. He worked for Amos Supply, where he apprenticed to be a plumber. In 1968, he moved his family to Menard, where he owned and operated H.W. Wood Plumbing & Contracting for over 50 years. He was very active in the Menard community, volunteering with the Gideons and the Menard Civic Theater Group. He also served on the Menard Hospital Board for several years. He was one of the founding members of the Frontera Clinics. He served as member and President of the Frontera board. He was the Treasurer and served as a Deacon at The First Baptist Church of Menard for well over 40 years. He worked for GTE and buried phone cable and climbed and repaired numerous AT&T phone towers in the 1980’s. H.W. was a proud member of the Masonic Lodge for over 65 years. He also was a member of the Scottish Rite and had earned his 32nd Degree Mason. He was happy to sponsor Henry Maserang and Jay Wright together into the Scottish Rite. He was a past Master of the Ft. San Saba Masonic Lodge and was honored to be awarded the Golden Trowel Award, an award from the Grand Lodge of Texas for recognition and to honor distinguished Masons for their devoted service to Masonic principles. It is also the highest honor that any lodge can bestow on a brother Mason. He enjoyed many annual trips to Waco, Texas, to attend the Grand Masonic Lodge Convention. He was a Boy Scout leader in the 1970’s and a member of the Girl Scouts of America and assisted his wife with the Girl Scout camping trips and the upkeep of the Girl Scout House in Menard in the 1970’s-80’s. He enjoyed working with leather, making cabinets, bird watching, and playing Dominos. In H.W.’s later years he took great pleasure in spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life service for Horace “H.W.” Wood will be at 10:00am, September 6, 2025, at the First Baptist Church, 301 Tipton, Menard, Texas with Reverend Grady Arnold officiating. Interment with Masonic Rites will follow at Rest Haven Cemetery in Menard. Friends may view H.W. Wood’s Memorial Video Tribute and/or sign his online memorial guest book at www.leatherwoodmemorialchapels.com.

H.W. is survived by his son Michael Wayne Wood of Menard, Texas; daughters Susan Denise Garrett and husband Rocky of Menard, Texas and Dava Gail Wood of Menard, Texas; eight grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and brothers Roy Dean Wood and Jimmy Lee Wood. Memorial contributions in memory of Horace Weldon “H.W.” Wood may be made to the Ft. San Saba Masonic Lodge Scholarship Fund and/or the First Baptist Church Scholarship Fund.
