ButterflyInFlowersWith the fall harvest season well underway, the Brownwood Area Community Garden wants to encourage local gardeners to save some of their own seeds.  Saving your seeds is easy, saves money, and over time, can help you develop plant varieties that are better adapted to your garden site.

Area gardeners are invited to attend a class on seed gathering and seed saving, this Saturday, October 24th, at 11 a.m., at the Brownwood Area Community Garden, located at 1514 Dublin Street, in Brownwood.  Class fee is $5, or free for gardeners who currently lease space at the Garden or those who sign up and pay for a lease on Saturday.

“We still have space available to lease, and it’s not too late to start a fall or winter garden,” says Daniel Graham, Garden Coordinator.  “This class will include gathering some vegetable, herb, and flower seed from the Garden, so everyone will leave with something to plant at home.”

The seeds to be collected will be long beans, garlic chives, and cosmos.  According to Graham, “garlic chives are edible perennial herbs that make a great companion plant to most vegetables as well.  They are shade and drought tolerant, and will spread on their own, so they are a versatile addition to any garden.”  Garlic chive plants in containers will also be available for sale.
