September is National Childhood Cancer Awareness month, and the Brownwood Lions as well as the Lionettes, Cheerleaders, and Crew will be honoring local cancer survivors by hosting a “Go Gold” game.

Local child survivors were recognized on the center of the field before kickoff Friday night.  They also helped BHS exchange gifts with representatives of opponents Liberty Hill High School.

Special Go Gold, Go Bold t-shirts were sold and worn by fans to the game.  Lionettes and other students collected donations in the stands for Hope from the Heart in support of local children currently battling cancer.

Hope from the Heart, a local childhood cancer support group, helps to raise money for families struggling in the fight against cancer.  Board member and Brownwood Middle School Assistant Principal Sandra Richardson appreciated the support during Friday’s game.

“Seeing all the gold bows, and shirts, it’s like a big warm hug,” said Richardson.  “There have been 3 new cases of childhood cancer diagnosed this year, plus we gave our first Hope scholarship to a newly graduated childhood cancer survivor this year, so we want to try and raise as much money as we can so we can keep giving,” explained HFTH board member Sandra Richardson.
