A fire at a hunter’s cabin at a property on County Road 121 in northern Brown County was determined suspicious and is being investigated as a possible case of arson, according to Brownwood Fire Marshal Buddy Preston.

The property is remote, near the Coleman County line.  The initial report of the fire was called in at approximately 3:40 p.m. on Monday.  When firefighters arrived, the structure was reduced to a pile of rubble and deemed a total loss.

A neighbor, who was on scene, reported to Preston that the cabin had a gun safe inside which was full of firearms and was visible from the doorway of the cabin.  When the gun safe and firearms were found to be missing, an investigation was initiated.

Because the property is a recreational property, no one was living at the cabin at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported.

Preston stated that he and arson dog Nika investigated the remains of the structures on Tuesday and collected samples which will be sent to the State Crime Lab in Austin.  The incident is being investigated as a case of arson and the burglary of a habitation, according to Brown County Sheriff’s Office.

Pictured above and below are the charred remnants of the cabin.  Photos contributed.
