Several students from the Brownwood High School (BHS) Band competed at the Region UIL Solo and Ensemble Contest on Saturday, February 22. BHS Band students earned a total of 10 Division 1 medals for Solos and 5 Division 1 medals for Ensemble.

“These students spent the last several weeks learning a collection of solos and small ensemble pieces,” stated BHS Assistant Band Director Ethan Yeats. “They also devoted their own time outside of school to work on their music.”

Division 1 Solo medalists included Kyle Recolizado (Alto Sax), Makenzie Williams (Tenor Sax), Allison Fulton (Trumpet), Anthony Lee (Trumpet), Karissa Raines (French Horn), Ian Cervantes (French Horn), T.J. Boisse (Trombone), Andres Contreras (Tuba), Madeleine Musgrove (Snare Drum), and Cooper Morgan (Marimba).

Students who earned Division 1 medals for their ensemble (a brass quintet) were Karter Shaw (Trumpet), Allison Fulton (Trumpet), Catherine Taylor (French Horn), Rachel Smith (Trombone), and Fonseca Estupinan (Tuba).

Those who earned a Division 1 rating on a solo or ensemble that was eligible to advance to the state level included Kyle Recolizado, Madeleine Musgrove, Cooper Morgan, and brass quintet ensemble musicians Karter Shaw, Allison Fulton, Catherine Taylor, Rachel Smith, and Fonseca Estupinan.

“Those students will travel to Pflugerville High School for the State Solo and Ensemble Contest at the end of May,” noted Yeats. “We are extremely proud of all students involved. Their commitment to events like this improves their individual musicianship, therefore improving the band overall. We’re thankful to have such great students in our band program.”
