Just before 6 p.m. Wednesday an active standoff took place in the vicinity of 1200 Eastwind in Early, before a peaceful resolution occurred approximately 90 minutes after the situation began.

Early Police Chief David Mercer shared the following details Wednesday evening:

Officers went to the 1200 block of Eastwind in Early to serve felony warrants on an individual. When they met the individual in the yard, when they went to try and arrest him, he pulled a gun and put it to his own head, at which time it became a standoff.

He fled into the woods toward the west a little bit, toward Early Middle School. At that time officers for the Brown County Sheriff’s Office and DPS, along with Bangs, assisted.

We had him contained in the woods and began negotiations trying to talk him down. Brown County Mental Health Deputies arrived here and assisted in the negotiation and were eventually able to talk him down about an hour and a half later.

Abilene SWAT was contacted and was en route, but the subject surrendered just prior to their arrival.

Currently an emergency detention warrant is being issued to take him to a mental health hospital. After that, the warrants will be served when he’s released, and he’ll probably face additional charges.

Mercer added that due to the mental health aspect of the situation, the name of the person in custody is currently being withheld.
