The Better Living for Texans (BLT) Program is celebrating 30 years of helping improve the health and lives of Texans through nutrition, physical activity, and gardening education. Our programs teach customizable healthy habits for every lifestyle, life stage, and budget. As we start this new year, here are ways to customize your health with some of the information we have shared over the

Make Healthier Meals

  • Follow the MyPlate Guidelines:
    • Fill half of your plate with fruits and vegetables and eat a variety of colors.
    • Choose lean protein like lean cuts of beef, chicken and pork or nuts and seeds.
    • Make simple swaps with nonfat or low-fat dairy and look for whole grains.
  • Aim for moderation over elimination; enjoy the foods you love while being mindful of the amount you eat.

  • Compare brands when shopping for both price and nutrition value.

Improve Physical Fitness

  • Make physical activity an easy part of your routine through practical opportunities like scheduled movement breaks throughout the day, choosing the longer walking route from the car to your destination, or using household items as weights.
  • Look for activities offered locally like at a recreation or community center.
  • Participate in an employee wellness program if offered at your place of work.

Grow Your Own Foods

  • Learn about the growing seasons and what fruits and vegetables grow best in your region. Start small choosing one or two of your favorites.
  • Pick a space that gets adequate sunlight and has access to water. Container gardening is an easy and space saving option.

Rice Porridge

Recipe by Priscilla Ofori, BLT Project Specialist

Ingredients:

2 cups white rice

½ teaspoon salt

6 cups + 2 cups water

½ cup reduced-fat milk

1 teaspoon sugar or

sweetener of choice per serving

(optional)

Directions:

  1. Combine rice, salt, and 6 cups water in a medium pot, uncovered, and bring to a boil on medium-high heat.
  2. Continue to cook for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  3. Stir in 2 cups of water and the milk and cook for another 10 minutes, stirring frequently.
  4. If desired, add sugar or sweetener of choice.
