The HPU Department of Theatre and Department of Spanish and Hispanic Studies will present “Hispanic Tales” by Barbara Winther as part of HPU’s Homecoming weekend. Performances will be held at HPU’s Theatre on Friday, October 18, and Saturday, October 19, at 7:30 p.m.; and Sunday, October 20, at 2:30 p.m.

“This bilingual performance is a treat for all ages, depicting several traditional folk tales with vibrant characters, colorful costumes, lively music and dance and engaging stories that celebrate the history and culture of Hispanic and Latino peoples,” said Dr. Nicholas Ewen ’02, associate professor of theatre and department chair.

This production is directed by Dr. Ewen, with Dr. Danny Brunette-López, professor of Spanish and chair of modern languages, serving as dramaturg and language coach. Assistant directors are Aniyah O’Neal, a junior majoring in social work, and Krysta Bunch ’22, with choreography by Millicent Williams, a senior majoring in theatre. The cast and crew are comprised of several HPU students from a variety of majors, HPU alumni and members of the local Brownwood community.

“As part of the 2024 HPU Homecoming, as well as the celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, this special performance is sure to be both entertaining and educational for everyone,” said Dr. Ewen.

Performance run-time is approximately one hour and 15 minutes, and admission is $5 per person. Ticket reservations can be made through the HPU Homecoming registration website www.hputx.edu/homecoming, or can be purchased at the door depending on availability.

The production is also supported by Amigos Unidos, HPU’s student-led club that provides exposure to Hispanic culture and promotes peace and cultural awareness through a variety of activities and authentic traditions and celebrations.
