Brownwood Police investigated a fraudulent prescription, thanks to a local pharmacist, which led to the arrest of an Amarillo man on several drug related charges.  Brownwood Police released the following information regarding the incident.

Brownwood Narcotics Investigator Aaron Taylor was contacted by a local pharmacist out of concerns for a possible fraudulent prescription at approximately 5:00 p.m. on Friday, January 23, 2015.

Detective Taylor responded to Jacobs Pharmacy, located at 2701 Austin Avenue, and met with the pharmacist who provided a prescription for review.  The prescription was determined to be a photocopy.  Detective Taylor continued his investigation and waited at the pharmacy for the suspect to retrieve the filled prescription.  The suspect, 32-year-old Stephen Tyler Havins, did return for the medication and was detained at that time.

Further investigation revealed that Havins was traveling from his home in Amarillo, Texas to Killeen; stopping at various locations along the way to submit the photocopied prescription at pharmacies.  Detective Taylor was able to locate three additional pharmacies in Brownwood and one in Abilene where the prescription was filled and medication dispensed.

Subsequent to Havins’ arrest, an inventory was conducted of his vehicle prior to towing it from the scene.  During the inventory, more copies of the prescription were located along with various filled prescriptions, weapons and a large sum of money.

Havins was arrested and transported to the Brown County Jail where he is being held on bonds totaling $75,000 for Possession of a Controlled Substance, Prescription Fraud and Money Laundering.

The investigation remains open and more charges are possible.
