Brownwood ISD presented Mrs. DaLin Cummings and the family of James Crow with $3500 checks on Monday, December 8th, during the Brownwood ISD Board of Trustees Meeting.  A total of $15,111 was raised during the Brownwood ISD “Pink-Out” fundraiser, making it the most successful yet.

This is the third year that Brownwood ISD has held the event that encourages the employees, students, parents, and the community to wear pink throughout day in support of those who are battling cancer.  Each year, funds are raised through sales of a custom t-shirt designed by the district specifically for the event, and donations made at the designated “Pink-Out” football game later in the evening.  This year’s Pink-Out was held on October 31st, coinciding with breast cancer awareness month.

Brownwood High School Counselor, Sheila Senkirik, conducted the presentation of the checks to Cummings and Crow with the help of BHS seniors, Brady Taylor and Taran Cardenas.

DaLin Cummings and Melissa Crow, Northwest Elementary teacher and mother of James Crow, were both presented with over-sized checks to symbolize the funding they will receive to help with medical costs as a result of their ongoing battle with cancer.

Cummings, the Digital Media Specialist at Brownwood Middle School, has been battling cancer for the last 2 years after spots were detected on her spine.

James Crow, a 2012 graduate of Brownwood High School, was diagnosed with ALL (Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia) on November 5th this year and will be undergoing treatment in Dallas for the next 12 months.

“I want to personally thank all of our BISD Campuses that came together and worked really hard to sell the t-shirts,” said Senkirik, also thanking the media for getting the word out to the public. “We had a lot of public support. Big Country Ford came out and gave us another generous donation of $5000.  It’s just tremendous the [amount of] support that we’ve had.”

The remaining funds will be set aside for use in another presentation in the spring. “We had two nominations this year,” said Senkirik, who was also speaking on behalf of BISD’s Pink-Out Committee. “The remaining amount of the money is put back in reserves and we’ll look again in the spring to help out anyone as needed at that time.”
