Richard Johnson, a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather, who worked tirelessly in various professions, passed away on July 7, 2024, in Coleman, Texas. Born on August 11, 1937, in Oplin, Texas, Richard’s journey was marked by hard work, community service, and unwavering love for his family and friends.

Richard graduated from Novice High School in 1955 after growing up in Oplin. Following graduation, Richard dutifully served in the National Guard for several years.

Richard’s career was as diverse as it was fulfilling. He started as a lease operator in the oil fields before transitioning to become a skilled saddle and leather maker for many years. In 1984, Richard took a significant step by opening Johnson Feed Barn in Coleman. His commitment to serving the people of Coleman County and its surrounding areas never wavered, culminating in forty years of dedicated service.

Richard’s proudest accomplishments extended beyond his professional endeavors. His marriage to Ellen Jo Coats on January 12, 1957, in Abilene was a cornerstone of his life in addition to being a father to Renea. His involvement with the Coleman Rodeo Association, directorship at the Federal Land Bank, and years spent serving on the School Board for Novice Independent School District showcased his deep-rooted commitment to his community.

Remembered fondly for his love of family and friends, Richard’s warm demeanor was exemplified through simple pleasures like sharing a cup of coffee or engaging in heartfelt conversations with loved ones, customers, and community members.

In Richard’s passing, he is reunited with his parents, Leonard Richard Johnson and Aleene Swor Johnson; his beloved wife, Ellen Jo Johnson; and great-grandson Stockton Ray Shorb.

Richard leaves behind a legacy cherished by many. He is survived by his daughter Renea McMillan and husband Brent of Coleman; granddaughters Brittni Kaczyk and husband Josh of Novice and Whitney Shorb and husband Matt of San Angelo; great-grandchildren Breanna Kaczyk, Heston Shorb, Carson Shorb, and Jackson Kaczyk; as well as siblings Pat Gordon and husband Bob of Fort Worth, Pam Kincaid and husband Robert of Weatherford, and Larry Johnson of Oplin.

The family will host a visitation from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 9, 2024, at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel. Family and friends are invited to a funeral service at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 10, 2024, at First Baptist Church, 200 E. College Avenue, with Chad Anders officiating. Interment will follow in the Midway Cemetery. Services are entrusted to Stevens Funeral Home in Coleman.

The family kindly request memorial donations in memory of Richard to Coleman County Junior Livestock Association, P.O. Box 292, Coleman, Texas 76834 or to Coleman County Youth Activity Center, P.O. Box 766, Coleman, Texas 76834.

We invite you to share fond memories and words of comfort and condolence with the Johnson family by signing the guestbook on Richard’s tribute page at www.stevensfuneralhome.com. Stevens Funeral Home is honored to serve the Johnson family.
