Leigh Ann Lewis Barr, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, peacefully passed away on April 25, 2024, in Abilene, at the age of 73, surrounded by the love of her family. Born on August 8, 1950, at Edwards Air Base, California, Leigh brought light and joy into the lives of those around her from the very beginning. She was the cherished daughter of Ouida Chapman Lewis and Spencer R. Lewis.
Leigh’s early years were marked by the adventurous life of a military family, which took her to various bases across the United States, England, and Japan. When her father retired from the army, the family moved back to Grand Prairie. Her resilience was evident even in her youth. Later, her family settled in Brownwood, where she faced adversity with courage and grace following a life-altering auto accident during her high school years.
Despite the challenges she faced, Leigh’s determination never wavered. She graduated with honors from Howard Payne University, laying the foundation for a successful career as a technical writer and editor. Beyond her professional achievements, Leigh’s greatest source of pride and joy was her son, Chance Barr. She poured her heart into raising him.
Throughout her life, Leigh maintained a deep devotion to Christianity, finding solace and strength in her faith. She cultivated beauty in her surroundings through her love for flowers and gardening, bringing a touch of serenity wherever she went.
Leigh will be dearly missed by her son, Chance Barr and wife Leslie of Early; her brother, Jay Lewis and wife Anne; her sister, Melissa Connelly and husband Jim; and her cousin, Pama Monfries and husband Jim, all of Austin. She also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren, Korbin Barr of College Station, and Jensen Barr of Early, whose lives she enriched with her love and wisdom. She is preceded in death by her father Spencer R. Lewis, and mother Ouida Chapman Lewis.
A visitation to honor Leigh’s memory will be held at Heartland Funeral Home in Early, on Friday, May 3, from 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM, allowing friends and loved ones to pay their respects and share fond memories. Additionally, a private family memorial service will take place in Austin, celebrating Leigh’s life and the profound impact she had on all who knew her.
In the quiet moments, amid the blossoms she adored, Leigh’s spirit will continue to flourish, a testament to a life lived with courage, compassion, and unwavering devotion to those she loved. May she rest in eternal Heavenly peace.
