The Howard Payne University football program on Monday announced the hiring of Brandon Houston as the Yellow Jackets’ assistant head coach and offensive coordinator.

Brandon Houston, a veteran high school head coach and offensive coordinator, replaces Bradley Wilson who recently accepted the offensive coordinator position at Division I Hampton University.

“I am very excited to have Coach Houston joining the staff at HPU. He is a proven leader,” said head coach Kevin Bachtel. “He has had a very successful career as an offensive coordinator and a head coach. Coach Houston will be a huge asset to our staff and players.”

Before he arrived at Howard Payne, Coach Houston was a longtime high school football coach in the state of Texas as an Athletic Director, Head Coach, and assistant. He has served as an Athletic Director/Head Football Coach at Taylor High School (2021-2023) and Buffalo High School (2018-2020) and spent many years as an offensive coordinator in various Texas high schools.

“I am blessed to be joining the staff at Howard Payne University. My wife and I truly feel God has called us to serve here,” said Brandon Houston. “I am thankful that Coach Bachtel has placed his trust in me.”

Coach Houston has over 25 years of coaching experience. He has been a coordinator for over 20 years, running primarily Spread, Read-Option, and Run/Pass/Option (RPO) schemes.

He serves as the Executive Secretary of the Texas 7-on-7 Association coordinating and managing the State 7-on-7 Tournament. Coach Houston also has additional experience as a Clinic director for Texas Glazier clinics from 2010-2022.

Coach Houston added, “Howard Payne has a strong, Christ-driven mission spearheaded by Dr. Hines, our President, and Dr. Sims, the Director of Athletics. It is an honor to work with and learn from such outstanding men. I am excited and eager to join the HPU family.”

In 2005, he founded CoachHuey.com as a way to help share ideas and best practices for the game of football with coaches all over the world. The website has grown into one of the preeminent coaching forums on the internet. Selected as a Hudl 100 Key Figure in Sports & Technology.
