I used to be on top of things at Brownwood High School, but I’ve slipped a bit. My wife actually took me by the high school over the weekend and I got to see the progress being made on all the improvements out there. It is amazing to see, I mean just amazing! I have no idea what the plan is, but I can tell it’s going to be big and it’s going to be exciting to watch. It won’t be too terribly long before we’re celebrating the kids going to school there with all the new stuff open. It’s going to be amazing!

Speaking of amazing, have you heard the latest accomplishments at BHS, athletically. I just want to congratulate the Lady Lions on beating the first place Graham Lady Steers to clinch a playoff spot. How about Brownwood securing 23 berths in the Region 1-4A track meet. And then, we earn 3 regional tennis berths, and the list goes on.

Oh, let me not forget the Brownwood Lion baseball team. They’re pretty good, too. I’ll tell you what, if somebody had told me that they would win District, I would have been pleasantly shocked. I figured Stephenville was the overwhelming favorite. We beat them not once, not twice, but three times, and worse the third time than the other two. The third time was in Stephenville this weekend. So, Brownwood has already won the District Championship. They’ll scrimmage somebody, then they’ll play their last two District games against Glen Rose and then start the playoffs. You know what I’m thinking? I’m thinking the farther this thing goes along, we might not be a “one and done” or a “two and through” in this ’24 season! What I’m saying is this, you’ve got to be good enough to win! When I say good enough to win, you’ve got to have pitching. It’s as simple as that. Does Brownwood have enough? You don’t know until they get in there but they’ve got good pitching. I mean GOOD pitching! I love their starting pitching and they’ve got kids stacked up behind them. They have the makings of a team that can get to the State Championship round! I’m serious.

They are going, I think, to go on a run in the playoffs and I think they’re going to be a factor – a BIG factor – and have a shot at winning their first baseball State Championship. I may be pushing it a little bit, but I think they have a legitimate shot – kind of like when we had Shelby Miller and those guys and when we had Stovall and Meeks and all those. Hey, we’ve had some really good teams, but we just never made it to State. We may not this year, but I believe we can give them a run for their money.

Until next time, so long everybody.
