Off Mic With Ben Cox: The Weird Phone Call

bencox2My daughter is at camp, of course this week’s column is about her!

I was sitting in my living room with my daughter this weekend, and she got a phone call on the cell phone I got her last year. (You may remember that column, and the possible threat it posed!)

I listened as parents do (or SHOULD do) to their children’s conversations, and heard something that sounded odd. Not bad, just, odd.

She seemed surprised that the boy on the other end would be calling her, and he asked a simple question, then said bye.

Said young man asked her “What’re you doing?” and she answered him with a rundown of the current activity. (Or lack thereof) He said ok, well, bye and hung up.

She told me there were some other boys with him and it was a weird phone call.

She was baffled.

I, however, was not. And it both amused and confirmed things for me.

Boys are calling my daughter. And being put up to it by other boys. Presumably because of something said in the group by the boy who did the calling.

I knew immediately that this was the case, because I was on the opposite end of a few of those conversations myself once upon a time.

I quote Quantum Leap: Oh boy.

This is a game changer.

My daughter is the object of fascination for boys her age. (I used the term fascination because I am not even prepared to think about other words being used regarding my little girl at this point!)

I would blame myself for buying the phone and thusly allowing my daughter to be contacted by boys free from having to call me and ask for her by name.

But then again, it’s gonna happen anyway.

Didn’t stop me. (And remembering being her age and making those calls, part of me is glad I don’t have to answer them!)
