According to information provided by the Texas Department of Public Safety, a two-vehicle accident seven miles east of Comanche on U.S. Highway 67/377 at 7:45 a.m. Friday claimed one life.

Sergio Vasquez Cardona, 30, of Brownwood was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:10 a.m. by Justice of the Peace Johnny Conine after the 2014 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck he was driving east lost control and veered into the westbound lane, striking a 2000 Ford F150 pickup truck. The driver of the Ford pickup, 19-year-old Kolton Ponnie Edward Smith of Dublin, was transported to Texas Health Hospital in Stephenville with serious incapacitating injuries.

Both drivers, the lone occupants of each vehicle, were wearing seatbelts according to the DPS. The weather was clear, but road conditions were wet, the preliminary investigation report noted.
