Lady Jackets rally past Ozarks in fourth for first ASC win, 67-58

The Howard Payne University women’s basketball team used a 24-point fourth quarter to defeat the University of the Ozarks 67-58 Saturday afternoon in conference play.

Down 48-43 going into the final period, Howard Payne outscored the Ozarks 24-10 powered by shooting 50% from the field, 

With the Lady Jackets leading 27-24 at the halftime break, the Eagles gained the lead with their own 24-point quarter in the third.

The Lady Jackets outrebounded the Eagles 49-30 in the game and HPU led in second chance points 15-0, fast break points 11-0, and bench scoring 49-0.

HPU was led by Aja Holmes and Brenna Welsh with 12 points each. Holmes was 5 of 8 from the field. Welsh was 6 of 6 from the free-throw line.

Asia Mitchell had a great overall game for the Lady Jackets finishing with seven points, a game-high 12 rebounds, five assists, and two steals.

Ozarks was led by Heaven Hayden with a game-high 25 points followed by Abby Beene with 15 points

Howard Payne is now 5-3 overall and 1-1 in American Southwest Conference action. Ozarks stands at 2-5 overall and 0-1 in league play. Howard Payne will play next on the road at Hardin-Simmons in Abilene, Texas on Thursday at 5:30 pm.
