Funeral services for Mary Horne, age 79, of Lake Brownwood, will be at 1:30 PM, Thursday, May 15, 2014 in the Heartland Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Eastlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 6:00 until 7:00.
Mary died Tuesday, May 13, 2014 in Brownwood.
Mary Rosalind McFarland was born January 17, 1935, in Seymour, Texas, in Baylor County, to Rosalind Olsen and Windell Ray McFarland. She married Charles Clement Horne July 15, 1952 in Lovington, Lea County, New Mexico. Together she and Charles had two children, Teresa and Cavin.
She graduated from Odessa High School in 1953 and the University of Texas Permian Basin in 1975. She was a member of Central United Methodist Church of Brownwood, the Welcome W. Chandler Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, Beta Sigma Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi and Phi Kappa Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta International.
Mary is preceded in death by her husband, Charles, her parents and her brother. She is survived by her daughter Teresa Kelly and husband Doug, son Cavin Horne and wife Vickie, six grandchildren – Charlie Kelly, Mark Horne, Alyssa Ybarra, Amanda Gentry, Cory Whisman & Tyson Whisman, and ten great-grandchildren—Trystin, Kylee, Lexie, Peyton, Adalyn, Cutter, Sawyer, Weldon, Westyn & Talon.
Mary loved her Lord and served Him at every opportunity. She volunteered at her church, led devotionals at Aldersgate, and volunteered her time at the Brown County Historical Library. She was a talented seamstress and liked to sew and quilt. Her favorite saying was “If life gives you scraps, make a quilt”. She made and gave away numerous turbans for those going through chemo treatments that had lost their hair.
Mary, or Granny, as she was known to all her grand kids and great-grand kids, loved her family. She never turned down a visit to see the kids and grand kids. She was quick to join in any fun that happened to be going on whether it was swimming, boating, or fishing and she could play a mean game of wahoo or rummikub. She would not “let” you win.
She always had a smile even during the last months when her health was rapidly failing. She lived her last debilitating and painful months with grace and at times even laughter. She will be greatly missed by those who were touched by her warmth and love. She was truly a “Proverbs” woman.
