“What are you doing for others?” That question is the focus of the current Choices mentoring group at Brownwood High School. Choices students are a group of junior and senior students at BHS that volunteer their time to work with 4th, 6th, and 8th grade children in the district.

“The Choices students have been visiting the 6th grade science classes this year during the fall and spring semesters,” said Brownwood ISD Choices Coordinator, Lisa Gabaree. “While visiting the Intermediate classes, they have taught them skills related to goal setting, bullying prevention, staying drug free, and how to deal with peer pressure.”

Each Choices student is prepared to lead group discussions, guide children in learning activities, and giving motivational talks on basic life skills that help people to be successful.

“The main goal of the Choices program is to give junior and senior students the opportunity to help and encourage others by volunteering their time to motivate and remind younger students that success is built one decision at a time,” explained Gabaree. “Focusing on the future and setting goals to achieve dreams takes planning, courage, and a daily effort. Making positive choices and overcoming mistakes quickly is a key factor in dealing with life in a successful manner, no matter the environment or circumstances.”
