Security, Coggin auditorium, elementary gym floors, BHS tennis court getting first improvements from bond

Dr. Joe Young

During a visit to KOXE Friday morning, Brownwood ISD Superintendent Dr. Joe Young gave an update on the progress regarding some of the items approved in May’s bond election.

Young stated improvements in security are already underway, with work on additional projects to begin soon.

“We started working on security over the summer and cameras have been updated in the places that needed updates, we’ve added cameras in spots that needed to be covered, and we replaced cameras that weren’t antiquated and started to tie them into a central system,” Young said. “The intercom communication systems all across the district are being tied together and improved, and we’ve completed a lot of fencing and door projects, along with, window tint filming.”

The first major project to be tackled, according to Young, is the Coggin Elementary auditorium that currently seats 890 – second only to the Brownwood Coliseum in terms of attendance for buildings in Brownwood.

“We’ll be getting new seats in there and the vendors have come out to measure, drawings have been given and we’re in the planning stages,” Young said. “Once the redesign is complete and the new seats are in it should seat about 850 to 870 people, and the work should be done over the Christmas holidays.”

Young added elementary gym floors at all campuses were also expected to be installed over the Christmas break.

“We met with all the schools and got their feedback, and we’ve discussed materials and design,” he said.

On the athletics front, Young stated the Brownwood High tennis courts would be the first to see improvements.

“We’re getting some design drawings and they’ve been doing some core samples on the ground and some Geo-tech surveys,” Young said. “We’re going to get going on it pretty soon, and that will be the thing people notice first driving down the street.”

Young added work on the new indoor facility, along with improvements at Gordon Wood Stadium and the baseball and softball fields is still several months away.

“There’s a lot taking place behind the scenes, but it’s going to take several months before you notice anything in public,” he said.
