The Brownwood ISD Board of Trustees met Monday, March 20.

During Monday night’s meeting of the Brownwood ISD Board of Trustees, the 2023-24 school year schedule was unanimously approved.

The 2023-24 school year will begin on Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2023 and conclude Friday, May 31, 2024.

According to BISD Deputy Superintendent Liesa Land, by a vote of 191-59 staff members opted for a Christmas break that begins Dec. 22 and extends to Jan. 9 for students, opposed to one that started Dec. 18 and concluded Jan. 3 for students. Based on the vote of the staff, the recommendation for the Dec. 22-Jan. 9 break was presented to the board.

Also Monday, the BISD Board unanimously approved the purchase, renovation, and financing of certain property for an appraisal office for the Brown County Appraisal District.

The Brown County Appraisal District, located at 403 Fisk, currently rents that property from the school district. In order for the Appraisal District to purchase a property, it must first be voted on by the BISD Board. Later, if the Brown County Appraisal District were to decide to move to the new location, that would require another vote from the BISD Board.

The board agenda stated the Appraisal District has “identified a property they wish to purchase which gives them multiple benefits. Under Section 551.072, the property address and price are confidential and provided under separate cover. The Board must approve BCAD’s ability to move forward with the purchase. The liability in regard to financing shall in all respects be solely that of Brown County Appraisal District and not that of the Voting Taxing Units (like BISD).”

As part of the consent agenda, Brownwood ISD will purchase six school buses at at cost of $651,313. However, BISD has been awarded a grant of $532,000, which will result in the six buses costing the district just over $119,000 total. The most inexpensive of the six buses would cost just over $128,000 alone if not for the grant.
