The playoffs came to a quick end as the Brownwood Lions lost 49-10 to a very explosive Stephenville Yellow Jackets team Friday night at Shotwell Stadium in Abilene.

The Lions came out fighting in the first half of the game with defense playing well according to Head Coach Chuck Howard.

“The team did just what we asked them to – ‘get into the fight.’  The defense played extremely well against a very, very good football team,” said Howard.  “Stephenville has an extremely explosive offense.”

A very tired Lions defense began to fade in the second half and the offense didn’t execute well according to Howard.

“We came out ready to play, we had a great first half,” said Howard.  “But we didn’t execute well in the second half on offense or defense.”

Howard stated that the team knows what they have to work on in the off season and will work hard to replace many talented seniors who will graduate this year.  Brownwood has several seniors who have suffered through many injuries this season.

“Many of our seniors suffered injuries and when they aren’t there, it is hard on us,” said Howard.  He pointed out that Stephenville had 11 seniors on offense and 7 on defense contributing to the strength of their team.

One such BHS senior, Braxton Kilgo was taken out of the game for a knee injury in the middle of the second quarter.    Howard commended his effort on both offense and defense this season.

“Braxton Kilgo is a warrior; he’s a great kid and a great citizen.  He’s been a leader and is the hardest working kid that I’ve ever known,” said Howard.  “He is going to be missed.  I can’t say enough about Braxton Kilgo.”

Although the Lions will be losing several key senior players, Howard stated that there are several young players who will be coming onto the team in the next year or two, which is very exciting.

Ending the season 4-7 is disappointing said Howard.

“I don’t like where we are.  I don’t like to lose and the kids don’t like losing,” said Howard.  “But I do like where we are heading.”
