In its third year at Brownwood Independent School District, the Watch D.O.G.S. Program is getting set to kick off in two exciting events at elementary schools in the district.

The first of the two Watch D.O.G.S kick-off events will be held at Northwest Elementary at 6:00 p.m. on September 17th.

The second event will follow at 6:00 p.m. on October 1st at Woodland Heights Elementary.

WATCH D.O.G.S.®, a K-12 program, invites fathers, grandfathers, uncles, or other father figures to volunteer at least one day all day at their child’s/student’s school during the school year. The program is designed to bring in and provide positive male role models for the students.

The Watch DOG volunteers perform a variety of tasks during their volunteer day including monitoring the school entrance, assisting with unloading and loading of buses and cars, monitoring the lunch room, or helping in the classroom with a teacher’s guidance by working with small groups of students on homework, flashcards, or spelling. A criminal background check will be conducted prior to being allowed on any campus.

According to Assistant Chief of Police James Fuller, the program is very important to the district and the community.

“I truly believe in this program and am thankful that it was brought her,” said Fuller in a recent email.

Fuller stated that the BISD school resource officer, Fred Bastardo, has been instrumental in getting the program initiated locally and has done a great work for the entire district.
