Local law enforcement officials report that Brown County Tax Assessor-Collector Cheryl Nelson passed away overnight at Brownwood Regional Medical Center.  She was 56 years old.

Brownwood Assistant Chief of Police James Fuller said that she passed away from natural causes.  No other information was available Saturday.

Nelson was appointed as interim tax assessor-collector in 2006 and was later elected to the position in 2008 where she served since that time.
