TxDOT Installing New Crossing Signal at Ron Jackson State Juvenile Correctional Facility

TxDotlogoThe Texas Department of Transportation will install a pedestrian crossing signal at a crosswalk on FM 3254 to enhance safety for visitors and employees walking between the Ron Jackson campus and parking lot.

“Our primary focus on the Ron Jackson campus is always the safety of our students, staff and visitors.  We are very grateful to TXDOT for working with us to make this crossing signal a reality,” said Buddy Vaughn, Training Specialist.

The mid-block signal will have two flashing amber beacons to alert drivers when a pedestrian is entering the crosswalk. The signal will be installed and functioning by late July. The device cost about $2,500.

Because the signals are wireless, installation is simple and relatively inexpensive, said TxDOT Brownwood Director of Operations, Carl Johnson, P.E.. Two similar devices are located at Early Elementary School, and another unit is being installed in Breckenridge.

Although the pedestrian signals provide an extra measure of safety, drivers are reminded to watch for pedestrians at all times, particularly in crosswalks, at intersections, in school zones and other areas with a high volume of foot traffic.

“Pedestrians are very vulnerable when crossing a street,” Johnson said. “We can install all kinds of pavement markings and signals to help improve safety, but they only work when drivers are paying attention and driving an appropriate speed.”
