Brownwood ISD recently announced the schedule for free meals offered to children through its participation in the USDA 2013 Summer Food Service Program. Meals will be provided to children ages 1 to 18 free of charge at the locations and times listed below:
- Brownwood High School Band, Athletics, BHS
July 29 to August 23, Monday-Friday, 8:30 am-9:30 am, Breakfast Only
- Brownwood High School, 2100 Slayden, Brownwood, TX
June 10 to June 27, Monday-Thursday, 7:30 am-8:00 am, and 12:00 pm-12:30 pm
- Brownwood Middle School, 1600 Calvert Rd, Brownwood, TX
June 10 to June 27, Monday-Thursday, 7:30 am-8:00 am, and 11:00 am-12:00 pm
- Brownwood Intermediate School, 800 Rogan, Brownwood, TX
June 10 to June 27, Monday-Thursday, 7:30 am-8:00 am, and 12:00 pm-12:30 pm
- Northwest Elementary, 311 Bluffview Drive, Brownwood, TX
June 3 to June 27, Monday-Thursday, 7:30 am-8:00 am, and 11:30 am-12:15 pm
- Brownwood Boys & Girls Club, 1600 Ave. K, Brownwood, TX
June 3 to August 16, Monday-Friday, 8:15 am-8:45 am, and 12:00 pm-12:30pm
“No applications or paperwork is necessary,” said Brownwood ISD School Nutrition Director, Steve Locke. “The summer feeding program is meant to be an easy program to administer and carry out for everybody.”
Though some of the meals are served at off-campus locations and at varying times, the availability remains the same. “The meals served at the Boys & Girls Club are open to the public, and you don’t have to be a member of the club to get a meal,” said Locke. “Beginning July 29th, we start serving again at the high school to accommodate students returning for band and sports practices before school starts. These meals are also open to the public and free under the same guidelines.”
“According to Texas Department of Agriculture, the program is very underutilized,” said Locke noting that free meals are also available to disabled students older than 18 and still in school. In addition, adults can eat for a small fee ($2 for breakfast, $3 for lunch).
The lunches provide foods that appeal to kids including hamburgers, chicken nuggets, and pizza.
Children will be served without discrimination. The same meals are available for all children regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age, or disability.
