Saturday, Sept. 3 will serve as the 15th anniversary celebration of the Martin & Frances Lehnis Railroad Museum. The museum project originated in 2001, and the facility opened on Sept. 17, 2007.

“Fifteen years is a big deal and we thought we should celebrate that,” said Lehnis Railroad Museum curator Crystal Stanley. “We tacked that on to our family day, which is the first Saturday of the month.”

The museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and the first 100 people will receive a ticket for a free drink and hot dog. The museum will also provide free popcorn, and local youths will be serving concessions, including cotton candy. Train rides, weather permitting, will also be available for $2. Numerous other local vendors, businesses, and organizations will be on hand as well.

The special day will focus on the museum’s beginnings and the legacy of Martin Lehnis and his wife Frances. A new exhibit will also be unveiled.

“The Good Booth will be back to do photo ops and, weather permitting, we’ll have some fun stuff happening outside,” Stanley said. “We’ll have bounce houses, Twisted Axes will be there with their axe throwing trailer. We’ll have the Whistling Pig there to do snowcones and concessions. The (Lake Brownwood) State Park will be there to put on a hobo camp and they will be demonstrating how to camp, how to set up a tent, how to cook outside and more. We’ve got the Legends of Iron Gunslingers who will be doing a train robbery gun show and re-enactment, so we have a lot of fun stuff planned even if it rains.”
