The Stars of Texas Juried Art Exhibit recently announced a new award category for Brown County students ages 12-17 years old. The Dr. Joyce R. Wilson Student Award will be given to one student whose work is accepted into the exhibit and award the young artist with $500 along with recognition at the invitation-only VIP Awards Ceremony and Reception. Traditionally the Stars of Texas Juried Art Exhibit has been open only to adults ages 18 years or older to enter their work for consideration. The new student award was made possible thanks to the family of Dr. Wilson.

“Charles and Sheri Wilson, both artists, participated in last year’s exhibit. They were both so pleased with the exhibit and their experience. They wanted to do something special for next year’s exhibit,” Amanda Coers, Stars Exhibit Chairwoman, explained. “When they found out there was an opportunity to help celebrate one of our very talented local students, they enthusiastically said yes and wanted to honor Charles’ mother, Dr. Joyce R. Wilson.”

Dr. Wilson was born in Wichita, Kansas in 1929. She was a Lincoln University, Mo. Graduate and received her Doctorate of Education from the University of Southern California. A lifelong teacher and administrator, she was a community volunteer and youth advocate even in retirement. She lived in Copperas after serving 20 years in the Department of Defense school system in Germany. Dr. Wilson always put kids and academic excellence first and her family is very excited to sponsor this new award for students.

Any Brown County student, public, private, or homeschooled, ages 12-17 years old as of January 1, 2023, is eligible to submit one work (painting, photograph, or sculpture) on Friday, January 27th, to be considered for inclusion in the 2023 Stars of Texas Juried Art Exhibit. Only one student will be accepted and given the award. The work must be listed for sale in the exhibit, and the student can set the price. All submissions must follow the guidelines in the 2023 prospectus which will be posted in the coming weeks.

The Stars of Texas Juried Art Exhibit will be accepting entries Friday, January 27th, from 5-8 p.m. and Saturday, January 28th, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Depot, located at 600 E. Depot Street in Brownwood. The 2023 Stars of Texas exhibit is a juried fine arts exhibit which is open to Texas residents 18 and older. Over $7,000 in awards will be presented at the invite-only reception on February 4, 2023.

Submitted entries must:
• Be original,
• Not be done under supervision,
• Not be a copy of published work, including photographs, by a person other than the artist,
• Have been completed within the last three years,
• Not have been previously exhibited in a Stars of Texas Juried Art Exhibit.
• Be suitable for display to young students. (Nude subjects will not be accepted.)
