The Brownwood Police Department issued the following press release Wednesday morning:

On Tuesday, July 5, 2022, at approximately 12:50am, Communications Division of the Law Enforcement Center received a 911 call of a report of shots fired. The caller identified himself as the victim and stated that he was running away from several people around Bostick’s Automotive on Belle Plain. The caller stated that he was shot in the leg.

As officer’s arrived in the area, they located the caller on Belle Plain and identified him as 17-year-old Christopher Lee Holland of Brownwood. Holland had an obvious gunshot wound to his hip and leg. Medical personnel arrived on scene and eventually transported Holland to Hendrick Medical Center-Brownwood for treatment. His injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

Investigators with the Criminal Investigations Division were contacted, and an investigation commenced. Holland was interviewed and identified 19-year-old Jamal Deon Baker of Brownwood as the suspect. During the investigation detectives were able to identify several other suspects and confirm the reasoning behind the shooting.

It is believed that a female suspect who knows both males contacted Mr Holland on the premise of purchasing marijuana. As Holland arrived at a residence on Poplar St., Baker and several others attacked him. Holland was able to flee the attackers and was subsequently shot at by Baker. Several shots were fired with one striking Mr Holland.

In the afternoon hours of July 5th, Baker and several other suspects were located and interviewed. All those interviewed provided consistent accounts of the incident and subsequently admitted to the assault. The firearm used in the assault was also located at a residence in Bangs, Texas. Baker was arrested at approximately 2:45 p.m. on a charge of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon.

The investigation remains ongoing and further arrests are expected.
