Brownwood Lion sophomore Sir Bubba Jones carded an opening round 78 at the 36-hole, two-round Class 4A boys golf state tournament at Legends Golf Course in Kingsland.

Jones is tied with Max Vergara of Levelland, Andrew Camp of Palestine, Kyle Doolittle of Comal Davenport, Colin Fairchild of Fredericksburg, and Dylon Everett of Kingsville King, all of whom are currently 11 strokes behind tournament leader Jaxon Donaldson of Wimberley, who fired a first-round 67.

Argyle’s Gaven Lane and Cooper Jensen are tied for second place with rounds of 70, and Waxahachie Life’s Nolan De Los Santos and Lake Belton’s Chandler Cooke are tied for fourth place after 71s. Twelve more golfers currently stand between Jones and the Top 5.

In the team standings, Argyle (290) is in first place at the halfway point followed by Bullard (311), Lake Belton (318), Bridgeport (319) and Andrews (320).
