browncountyhealthcenterIn 1995, the first week of April was declared National Public Health Week. Communities across the United States have observed Public Health Week as a time to draw the attention of the public to the contributions of public health organizations, and to focus on and recognize issues that are important to improving the health of people in our communities. This year, National Public Health Week will be observed April 1-7.

In recognition of the upcoming Public Health Week, the Brownwood/Brown County Health Department would like to remind the residents of Brownwood and the surrounding area of resources available at the health department.

Low-cost immunizations are offered at a walk-in clinic every Wednesday to qualifying children and adults. Immunizations are also offered on other weekdays by appointment only. The health department offers the following services to adults at a reduced cost: blood pressure checks, cholesterol checks, hematocrits, diabetes screening, B-12 shots (with MD prescription), TB testing (for adults and children), TB medications are provided for prevention and treatment of tuberculosis with MD prescription, and pregnancy testing. Confidential testing and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases are also available, as is HIV screening.

The WIC program offers nutrition education, breastfeeding support and education, WIC foods, and referrals. Pregnant women, breastfeeding women, postpartum women, infants and children younger than five years of age are eligible for services if they meet income guidelines. The WIC office is open Monday through Thursday from 7:30am until 6:30pm.

The Environmental Sanitation department handles food establishment inspections and permits, foster home and day care inspections, and general nuisances in Brownwood and Brown County.

The Emergency Preparedness department develops plans for emergency preparedness and response. The department coordinates with other local emergency planners to help develop guidelines for disaster preparedness in our area. The department also receives and investigates reports of communicable diseases and makes recommendations to protect and promote the health of the community.

In observance of National Public Health Week, April 1-7, 2013, the Emergency Preparedness department will be giving away free family emergency planning kits. The immunization clinic will also be offering free blood pressure checks.

The Brownwood/Brown County Health Department invites you to take advantage of any of the programs that are available at our facility. The health department is open Monday through Friday from 8:00am until 11:30am, and from 1:00pm until 4:30pm. For any questions about services or prices, please call 325-646-0554.
