
The May Tigers staked their claim as the best six-man football team in the state of Texas during the first two weeks of the season, posting wins of 51-6 over perennial power Borden County and 104-80 over defending state champion Sterling City. Now, the No. 1-ranked Tigers prepare for their first home game as the Knox City Greyhounds – in search of their first win of the season – invade May at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
In May’s win over Sterling City last week, the Tigers racked up 543 yards of total offense – 408 passing with nine touchdowns and 135 rushing with two more scores
Through the air, Blake Harrell completed 15 of 18 passes for 323 yards with seven touchdowns. Luke McKenzie connected on 5 of 6 attempts for 85 yards and two scoring strikes.
Leading receivers for the Tigers included Kaden Halk (8-145, 4 TDs), Kaysen King (6-104, 2 TDs), Avery Williford (3-100, 2 TDs), Bryson Guerrero (1-26, TD), Brian Kunkel (2-20), and McKenzie (1-13).
On the ground, Williford finished with 47 yards and two scores, Halk led all carriers with 48 yards, Harrell rushed for 21 yards, Damian Salinas tacked on 11 and Kunkel had an 8-yard carry.
The Tigers also added two defensive touchdowns on a 25-yard interception return by Salinas, who led May with 11 tackles. King finished with two interceptions, including a 26-yard pick six, and eight tackles. Kunkel notched 10 tackles, Williford amassed seven, Halk recorded six with five pass break ups, and Harrell logged five.
Knox City has started its season with losses to Class A Division II No. 1 Motley County (68-22) and Jayton (46-30).
The Greyhounds average 26 points and 242 yards – 128.5 passing and 113.5 rushing – per game, while allowing 57 points per outing.
Bryson Callaway has thrown for 193 yards with four touchdowns and two interceptions, Tristin Baxter has rushed for 173 yards and a touchdown, and Devin Guillory has caught six passes for 115 yards with two trips to the end zone.

Lingleville (0-2) at Blanket (2-0)
7:30 p.m. Friday
The Blanket Tigers have yet to lose under new coach Casey Mund, and will attempt to run their season-opening win streak to three games Friday as they host the winless Lingleville Cardinals.
Blanket has started its season with triumphs over Bryson (51-6) and Gustine (60-51), while Lingleville has fallen to Lometa (74-40) and Three Way (56-8).
In Blanket’s win at Gustine last week, Brayden Day rushed for 185 yards and two touchdowns of 16 and 54 yards to spark the Blanket (2-0) offense while Carlos Morales chipped in 114 yards and two scores of 2 and 5 yards. Levi Vasquez scored three times from 14, 5 and 9 yards out and gained 96 yards on the ground.
Defensively, Vazquez intercepted three Gustine (0-2) passes and returned a pick 80 yards for a touchdown. He also recovered a fumble and tallied 11 tackles. Day notched 11 tackles with a fumble recovery, and Morales finished with eight takedowns.

Evant (2-0) at Brookesmith (1-1)

The Brookesmith Mustangs are coming off their first victory of the season – and the Todd Lawdermilk coaching era – but will face their toughest task to date as they undefeated Evant Elks come to town.
After falling to Veribest, 41-12, to start the season, Brookesmith bounced back with a 30-26 win at Abilene TLCA last week. Evant owns victories over Moran (51-6) and Cranfills Gap (68-49).
In the win last week, Brookesmith finished with 309 yards of total offense – 254 rushing with four touchdowns and 55 through the air.
Tristen Slayton anchored the ground game with 187 yards and four touchdowns while Blayzon Walker contributed 67 yards.
Through the air, Conner Heard completed 7 of 17 passes for 55 yards. Slayton caught three passes for 35 yards, Walker added three grabs for 16 yards and Brandon Been hauled in a 4-yard reception.

Zephyr (0-2) at Stephenville Faith (0-2)
7:30 p.m. Friday
Both the Zephyr Bulldogs and Stephenville Faith Knights will attempt to secure their first victory of the season as the two teams square off Friday night.
Zephyr has started the season with losses to Sidney (21-18) and Veribest (31-12), while Stephenville Faith lost to Mineral Wells Community Christian (88-54) and Rochelle (62-40).
In Zephyr’s opener against Sidney, the Bulldogs scored the first two touchdowns but were unable to hold the lead.
Zephyr owned a 271-253 edge in total yards against Sidney, thanks in part to 207 yards and a touchdown on the ground by Jayden Millican. Eathan Gowin connected with Corbin Brown on an 11-yard scoring toss, caught three passes from Millican for 16 yards, and rushed for 42 yards and a touchdown from 35 yards out.

Richland Springs (0-1) vs. Coolidge (1-1)
7 p.m. Thursday at Jonesboro
After last week’s scheduled game at Austin Royals was canceled due to a lack of referees, the Richland Springs Coyotes are still seeking their first win of the season as they journey to Jonesboro Thursday night to tangle with the Coolidge Yellow Jackets.
Richland Springs started its season with a 62-34 loss at Marble Falls Faith. Statistical information on that game is not available.
Meanwhile, Coolidge has defeated Fort Worth THESA (36-32) while falling to Jonesboro (67-26).

Haskell (1-1) at Cross Plains (1-1)

The Cross Plains Buffaloes are looking to rebound from their first loss of the season as they welcome the Haskell Indians Friday night.
After toppling Menard, 33-14, in the season opener, Cross Plains was defeated by Goldthwaite, 27-0, last week. Haskell also fell last week, 34-14 to Archer City, after kicking off its campaign with a 22-6 win over Quanah.
Cross Plains was limited to 139 yards of total offense – 92 through the air and 47 on the ground – in last week’s loss. Kade Purvis completed 14 of 23 passes for 92 yards as Spade Koenig caught four for 22 yards, Cason Allen grabbed three for 32 yards and Asher Moses hauled in two for 26 yards. On the ground, Allen led the way with 45 yards.
Defensively, the Buffaloes surrendered 334 yards of total offense, with 296 coming on the ground.

Goldthwaite (1-1) at Olney (1-1)
7:30 p.m. Friday
Fresh off their first win of the season, the Goldthwaite Eagles hit the road for Olney where head coach Keith Virdell’s squad targets their first win streak of 2021.
The Eagles followed their 35-6 loss to Crawford with a 27-0 blanking of Cross Plains last week. Meanwhile, Olney dropped a 20-18 decision to Petrolia after topping Chico, 40-6, in its opener.
Last week against Cross Plains, The Eagles churned out 334 yards of total offense, with 296 coming on the ground. Evans tallied 79 yards rushing followed by Sanderson with 76, Patrick with 74 and Seth Gardner with 59. Through the air, Patrick connected on 3 of 8 passes for 38 yards.
Defensively, Goldthwaite allowed just 139 yards of total offense – 92 through the air and 47 on the ground.
Olney is averaging 286.5 yards per game, with 279 coming on the ground. Leading rushers include Jovani Rockmore (226 yards, 2 TDs), Gatlin Guy (143 yards, 2 TDs) and Jonathan Melchor (115 yards, TD).
Guy has Olney’s only pass completion of the season, a 15-yarder to Cole Turner.

Mason (2-0) at San Saba (0-2)
7:30 p.m. Friday
The San Saba Armadillos, still eyeing their first win of 2021, continue their treacherous pre-district slate as they welcome the Class A Division I No. 6 Mason Punchers Friday night.
The Armadillos have started the season with losses to Eldorado (42-20) and Rogers (46-14), while Mason has knocked off Comanche (34-13) and Comfort (39-6).
In San Saba’s outing against Rogers last week, the Armadillos surrendered the game’s first 23 points Friday night and trailed 30-7 at halftime.
San Saba was limited to 209 yards of total offense – 193 passing and 16 rushing.
Lance Taylor completed 20 of 39 passes for 181 yards with a touchdown and an interception, while Tegen Suiz added a 12-yard completion. Leading receivers were Reagan Mejia with eight grabs for 48 yards and a touchdown, Tyler Johnson with six catches for 71 yards and Wesley Lackey with four catches for 57 yards.
On the ground, Suiz rushed for 8 yards, Lackey tallied 6 and Taylor added 2 as San Saba ran the ball just eight times.
