Funeral services for Marie Taylor Atkins, age 91, of Brownwood, will at 2:30 PM, Sunday, October 7, 2012 in the Heartland Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Benny M. Allcorn officiating.  Visitation will be held prior to the service from 1:30 until 2:30 at the funeral home.

Ms. Atkins passed from this life on Wednesday, October 3, 2012 in Brownwood.

Marie was born on April 13, 1921 in Brownwood to Sidney L. and Verdie M. Taylor. She graduated from Brownwood High School where she was a member of the Drum Corp of the BHS Pep Squad.

Marie moved to New York City to join R.H. Macy’s Executive Training Squad and became a cosmetic buyer.  She returned to Brownwood in the 1960’s working in management and accounting fields, mostly for H. Gene Autry.  Marie was a longtime member of Union Presbyterian Church.

In 1989, Marie was voted Coming Home Queen for Brownwood High School at her 50th year class reunion.  In 2008 she received a proclamation from the City of Brownwood as Brownwood’s First “Tax Lady” for twenty five years a volunteer with Volunteer Income Tax Assistance(V.I.T.A.), a program that offers free income tax service to low income, the disabled and senior citizens.

Marie was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Aubrey S. Taylor and Robert Lynn Taylor.
