GATESVILLE – The Brownwood Lady Lions rallied from a three-run deficit to collect their first District 6-4A softball victory of the season, 11-8 over the Gatesville Lady Hornets Tuesday night.

Trailing 6-3 after four innings, the Lady Lions (5-11-1, 1-2) struck four runs in the top of the fifth and added two runs each in the sixth and seventh innings.

The Lady Lions finished with 20 hits against Gatesville (5-16, 0-2) pitcher Kinsey Gardner, led by five from Auzzlyn Benedict, four from Chesney Covey, three from Cecilia Rodriguez, two each from Annie-Klein Allgood and Dakota Simpson, and one apiece from Mia Lopez, Hailey Snell, Chelsey Covey and Mackenzie Welch.

Rodriguez and Simpson finished with three RBIs apiece for Brownwood trailed by Snell with two and Benedict, Welch and Chelsey Covey with one each.

Allgood went the distance in the circle for the Lady Lions, yielding eight runs on nine hits with three walks and a strikeout.

The Lady Lions’ momentum shifting fifth inning featured an RBI fielder’s choice by Snell, followed by a two-out RBI single from Chelsey Covey and a go-ahead two-RBI single by Simpson that plated Snell and Welch, who walked.

Brownwood stretched its lead to 9-6 in the sixth as Snell doubled home Benedict and Welch singled home Rodriguez. Both Benedict and Rodriguez singled to reach base.

The Lady Lions tacked on two more runs in the seventh as Benedict singled home Lopez, who doubled, then Rodriguez knocked in Benedict to boost the lead to 11-6.

Brownwood carried a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the second inning, where Gatesville reeled off six runs over its next three at-bats to grab the lead.

The Lady Lions scored twice in the first inning on a two-RBI double by Rodriguez, which followed two-out singles from Benedict and Allgood.

In the second, Simpson doubled to plate Chelsey Covey, who reached on an error, for a 3-0 cushion.

Next up for Brownwood is its first of two district byess. The Lady Lions return to action at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 6 as they wrap up the first half of district action at home against Stephenville (8-11, 1-1).
