BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Early boys, May girls secure victories

TUSCOLA – The Early Longhorns started their 2020-21 basketball season in dramatic fashion Monday afternoon, chalking up a 62-60 overtime victory over the Jim Ned Indians.

Early trailed 19-10 after one quarter, 27-24 at halftime and 42-32 after three periods. The Longhorns outscored Jim Ned 20-10 in the fourth period to force the extra session, where Early owned a 10-8 advantage on the scoreboard.

Vic Cooper paced Early with 19 points while Ethan Mitchell chipped in 18 points.

The Longhorns (1-0) will take the court again at noon Tuesday at Hawley.

May girls 65, Cherokee 41

CHEROKEE – The Class A No. 24 May Lady Tigers improved to 5-1 on the season, rolling past Cherokee for a 65-41 victory Monday afternoon.

Reese Chambers led the charge for May with 19 points followed by 14 from Roberta Robinette, 10 from Lexi Fox, even from Melanie Murphree, four points each from Sophie Lord, Korlei King and Hannah McKenzie, and three from Brianna Steele.

The Lady Tigers will be back in action Tuesday, Dec. 1 at Rochelle.
