Area firefighters responded to a pair of grass fires Friday evening approximately 5 miles south of Brownwood on FM 45.  The fires were about a mile apart, each on the side of the roadway.

Witnesses on scene of the southern fire said that they saw lightning strike as they traveled south on FM 45 and then saw a small fire begin to spread.  The travelers reported the fire to emergency dispatch and stayed in the area to make sure the fire was under control.  Power was also reported to be out in the area.

The Brownwood Fire Department and Brookesmith Volunteer Fire Department responded to the fires and quickly got them under control.
