Head coach Sammy Burnett announced Monday morning that the Brownwood Lions have picked up a Week 11 football game that will be played Friday, Nov. 6, barring any additional changes to the District 5-4A Division I schedule.
The Lions will visit district rival Waco La Vega in a non-district game as neither team has a full 10-game schedule due to cancellations throughout the year. The game will not count toward the district standings as last week the 5-4A District Executive Committee voted to force the Lions to forfeit their originally scheduled game last week at Midlothian Heritage and this week’s game at Waco La Vega as Brownwood did not close its schools after one football player tested positive for COVID-19 which resulted in 47 student-athletes being quarantined.
“We need to play, our kids have a right to play and they deserve to play as many games as possible,” Burnett said. “We’re going to see if we can use that game to sharpen our skills and prepare to step into the playoffs where I expect us to be.”
Plans could change, however, as there has been a recent COVID-19 outbreak in the Waco area that has led to Waco High and Waco University shutting down and returning to remote learning only, and Baylor’s football game against Oklahoma State this week has already been cancelled.
The Lions will resume District 5-4A Division I Oct. 23 as they host Alvarado, then travel to Waxahachie Life Oct. 30 for the league finale. Waxahachie Life defeated Alvarado, 20-14, this past Friday. If Brownwood wins its final two district games, the Lions will qualify for a 12th straight trip to the playoffs.
This Thursday, Oct. 15, the Brownwood Freshman Lions will host La Vega at 5 p.m. in subvarsity action.
