The Ultimate Team Challenge bull riding competition is slated to take place at 7 p.m. Saturday at Razzy’s Place, located at 1601 Dublin in Brownwood, featuring PBR and PRCA caliber riders, according to Shannon Coan, one of the event organizers.

“It’s a big money event and there’s going to be all types of riders,” Coan said. “It’s kind of like PBR on steroids. All these bucking contractors include myself, we buck bulls in the PBR and some of us were in Odessa two weeks ago. My riders are PBR riders and pretty much every team that brings their own two riders, their two riders will be PBR or PRCA type riders.”

Four-time PRCA world champion J.W. Harris, who currently resides in Goldthwaite, will be on hand as well as J.T. Pettitt from Odessa, among others.

Coan further elaborated on the event.

“You bring two riders and draw the third,” Coan said. “It was going to be 20 bull teams, that’d be 60 bulls, but we added three extra bull teams, so we’ll have 69 bulls and riders. They draw their third rider, and there’s a lot of them in the third ride draw. There may be a local guy or two in there from Brownwood, but the majority are from Wyoming or other places coming in, big riders.”

The top five places receive cash prizes including $12,000 and belt buckles to the winning team.

The event is one of six in the Ultimate Team Challenge.

“This is the first one we’ve done in Brownwood,” Coan said. “We’ve done these in the Odessa area and we’ll be in Hico next month (Sept. 26). This year it’s a six-event series and next year it will be a 12-event series, one a month, with over $100,000 in added money to the champions in Odessa next year.”

As for the decision to add Brownwood to the rotation, Coan said, “Some friends of mine, Cody Rasberry and Bradley Rasberry, have a little setup out here in the woods that’s pretty nice. I’m from Dublin, born and raised there, and used to ride there. I wanted to bring something back as close to home as I could get. Brownwood was the place and we will be doing an event here next year.”

The cost to attend is $10 per person, with kids under 8 admitted free. Gates open at 5 p.m. and masks and social distancing guidelines will be enforced.
