BELTON – The Brownwood Lady Lions volleyball team kicked off their second season under head coach Allison Smith with a 25-23, 25-17, 25-11 straight-set victory over first-year Class 4A high school Lake Belton Friday afternoon.

“It was a really solid, promising start for us and I’m proud of the way they girls played,” Smith said. “We started off slow and jittery the first two sets but we really came together. I could really go through and name every girl on the roster and how great they came together. It’s going to be a great season.”

Tessa Goodwin led the attack on offense with five kills trailed by four each from Olivia Fowler, Kylie Morris, Jaylen Savage, and Ashlyn Storm. Katelyn Windham chipped in three kills while Grace Boswell logged one.

Goodwin also dished out 10 assists followed by Kylie Wooten with eight and Caitlyn Moody with a pair.

Brownwood registered 15 aces with five coming from Fowler while Boswell and Wooten served four apiece. Morris and Cassidy Wooten each tallied one ace.

On the defensive end, Moody’s 29 digs led the Lady Lions followed by 10 from Goodwin, eight from Fowler, five from Boswell, three from Kylie Wooten, two from Windham and one each from Morris, Savage and Storm.

Storm collected two blocks while Morris, Savage and Windham contributed one each.

“We were led defensively by Caitlyn Moody and Gracie Boswell who were extremely consistent and read the court,” Smith said. “Olivia Fowler was strong serving, defensively and offensively for us. Tessa Goodwin had a great game setting and hitting. Ashlyn Storm and Jaylen Savage were both strong out of the middle and contributed blocks and kills. And Katelyn Windham is a powerhouse from the right side and outside.”

The Lady Lions (1-0) will return to action at 6 p.m. Tuesday when they welcome Dublin for the home opener.
