BrownwoodNews – The holiday season can be a dangerous time for alcohol-related crashes, deaths and injuries on Texas roadways. In 2017, there were 2,469 alcohol-related crashes in Texas during the holiday season. * These crashes killed 96 people and seriously injured another 202.

In response, Early Police Department and law enforcement officers across Texas will increase DWI patrols to identify and stop impaired drivers as part of the Texas Department of Transportation’s “Plan While You Can” campaign. The campaign aims to decrease crashes and save lives by urging drivers to plan a sober ride prior to driving to their holiday celebrations. The increased enforcement begins December 14, 2018 and runs through Jan. 1, 2019.
“Alcohol-related crashes are 100-percent preventable. There is no excuse for getting behind the wheel while impaired.” said David Mercer, Chief of Police for Early Police Department. “We urge drivers to take the simple step of planning ahead for a sober ride. It is a decision which can save a life.”
While drivers under the influence of alcohol risk killing or seriously injuring themselves or others, they also face up to $17,000 in fines and fees, jail time and loss of their driver’s license. Early Police Department and TxDOT strongly encourage everyone to plan for a sober ride before the celebrations begin. - Designating a sober driver
- Calling a cab or ride-share service
- Using mass transit
- Asking a sober friend or family member for a ride
- Spending the night
