Howard Payne University’s entering freshman class is spending the week getting acquainted with college life in fun and informative ways. Jacket Journey, HPU’s student orientation, is an opportunity for new students to meet one another as well as faculty, staff and returning students.

Residence hall move-in was on Tuesday, and the annual Chime In ceremony was held that evening. Students ceremoniously passed through HPU’s Wilson Gate and were greeted by family, faculty, staff and returning students before singing the university’s alma mater for the first time. Students will participate in Chime Out upon graduating from the university.

Wednesday and Thursday included games and team-building exercises. Other events included student-led worship, a talent show and athletic tournaments.

“Jacket Journey is designed to inform entering students about life at HPU and equip them for success,” said Dr. Brent Marsh, HPU’s vice president for student life. “During the week, they spend time in a variety of activities that help them to meet other new and returning students, as well as the various resources and opportunities on campus that will enrich their student experience. It’s a fun-filled, action-packed week in which we help prepare them to grow spiritually, intellectually and socially while at Howard Payne.”

Jacket Journey will continue throughout the weekend, including Saturday’s community service day, Serving with a Right Motive (S.W.A.R.M.). Projects this year include work for the Heart of Texas Christian Women’s Job Corps, Corinne Smith Animal Shelter, Brownwood Area Community Garden and Lake Brownwood.
