Lions Eliminated in 7-on-7 Quarterfinal Round

The Division II 7-on-7 football defending state champion Brownwood Lions made it to the quarterfinal round of the 2011 state tournament on Friday before being eliminated.

The Lions posted well earned wins in the first two rounds of the championship bracket on Friday taking down Wellington 41-14 and then Gilmer 36-35.  The Lions beat Gilmer with a two-point conversion in the closing seconds of the game.

In the quarterfinal round, the Lions were defeated by Lorena 31-20 to eliminate them from the tournament.

Melissa went on to win the state tournament by defeating Kinkaid 27-20 in the championship game.

The Bangs Dragons made it to round two of the consolation bracket to be defeated by Reicher 33-25.

Wellington scored 7 in their first series after Jiminez and Varccaro stopped
first two plays (0-7)
Stephens completed passes to Vaccaro and Mask, no score on Brownwood’s first
series
Wellington’s second series was stopped by Kemp, Vacaro, Humeniuk and ended
with Howey interception
Stephens to Mask, Ratliff, Vaccaro and to Wells for 7 yard TD, Wells
conversion (7-7)
Wellington’s third series stops by Horton, Jimenez, Monsen
Stephens to Mask and to Wells for 20 yard TD, Ratliff conversion (14-7)

Stephens to Mask and long pass to Ratliff for 30 yard TD, Vaccaro conversion
(21-7)
Wellington scored in first series of second half after several stops from
Jimenez, Howey and Vaccaro (21-14)
Stephens to Wells and to Howey for 35 yard TD, Wells conversion (28-14)
Wellington was stopped on their second series by Horton and several blocked
passes by Vaccaro
Stephens to Mask, Humeniuk, Mast and to Gordon for 10 yard TD, conversion
failed (34-14)
Wellington had several incompletes passes, stops by Newman and Ontiveros and
ended with 2nd Howey interception
Mcrane to Wells and Howey with TD pass to Gordon for 15 yards, Newman
conversion (41-14)

Brownwood unsuccessful during first or second series
Gilmer scored again on during third series after stops from Howey and
Vaccaro (0-13)
Stephens to Howey and Wells with Ratliff 5 yard TD, Ratliff conversion
(7-13)
Gilmer was stopped my Monsen, Horton, Kemp through an intense series with
Gilmer scoring again, (7-20)

Gilmer, Brownwood and official were all very intense during this game,
resulting in several penalties on both sides
Stephens to Howey and Long Pass to Wells, and again to Wells took for 3 yard
TD, Ratliff conversion (14-20)
Gilmer had several stops from Monsen, Stephens, and Jiminez, but finished
series with a score (14-27)
Stephens to Wells, Ratliff, with Horton 10 yard TD, Howey conversion (21-27)
Gilmer had several incompletes, stops from Monsen and Brownwood’s defense,
penalty call on Brownwood, and scored (21-35)
Stephens to Vaccaro and Howey scores with 7 yard TD, Gilmer penalty on 1st
