John Carroll White, 84, of Brownwood, Texas, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 15, 2026, with his two daughters by his side.

John was born June 24, 1941, in Knoxville, Tennessee, to John Hubert White and Helen Gertrude Davis White. He was a 1959 graduate of Young High School Class in Knoxville, and proudly served in the United States Air Force for 22 years, retiring as a Master Sergeant in 1981.

During his distinguished Air Force career, John earned numerous honors and commendations, including five Air Medals, awarded for meritorious achievement during aerial flight, as well as the Air Force Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster. He was also recognized for more than 1,000 flight hours aboard the C-130 Hercules.

Following his military service, John built a second career with 3M in Brownwood, Texas, where he became known for his technical skill, problem-solving ability, and hands-on work supporting major plant systems and upgrades until his retirement in 1998. Among the work he was especially proud of were projects connected to the plant’s emission control systems and microreplication facility expansion during the 1990s.

John was a lifelong problem solver who could fix nearly anything. Curious and intelligent by nature, he loved researching new ideas, tinkering with machines, and building cars and computers. He often said that YouTube could teach you anything and lived by the belief that “if there’s a will, there’s a way.” More than once, John became fully determined to build a perpetual motion machine, diving headfirst into research, sketches, and theories, certain he could solve what others could not.

A loyal Tennessee Volunteers and Dallas Cowboys fan, John also enjoyed watching car racing and women’s basketball. In retirement, he spent countless happy hours fishing, traveling to visit family, playing slot machines at the casino, and passing time in local game rooms where many knew him simply as “Bill.” Frugal to the core, he never met a penny he wouldn’t pinch and could often be found at his computer documenting his many thoughts and opinions on politics, current events, and life in general.

Friends and family will forever think of John whenever they reach for the simple things he loved, especially pecan sandies, Hershey’s Miniatures, and a room-temperature Coca-Cola.

John was a Methodist whose life was guided by faith, determination, and generosity of spirit. Above all, he loved his family deeply and remained grateful for the many blessings in his life.

Survivors include his sister Patricia L. Minton of Leesville, South Carolina; daughters, Angela Fabbiani and husband Robert of Brownwood, Texas, and Laura Ritchie and husband Chuck of Chewelah, Washington; grandchildren Derrin Twiford, Ashlee Kotelman, Mason Ryden, Mason Fabbiani, Theo Ritchie, and Genevieve Ritchie; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews, including Greg, Judy, Tommy, Cindy, Lisa, Jenny, and B.J.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John Hubert White and Helen Gertrude White, and his brother, T.R. White.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to C.A.S.T. for Kids Foundation https://castforkids.org/ in honor of John White and his love of fishing. A private visitation will be held for family and close friends. Graveside services with military honors will be held at Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Abilene, at a later date.

The White family has entrusted the care of their loved one to Heartland Funeral Home in Early. Condolences, memories and tributes can be offered to the online at heartlandfuneralhome.net
