
During Tuesday morning’s meeting of the Brownwood City Council, Mayor Stephen Haynes declared Tuesday, May 12, 2026 as Dallas Huston Day in the City of Brownwood, following the induction of the “The Voice of the Brownwood Lions” into the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame this past Saturday.
Haynes read a proclamation he later presented to Huston, which is as follows:
WHEREAS, Dallas Huston dedicated more than half a century to the advancement and celebration of high school and collegiate athletics in the State of Texas, serving as the beloved voice of the Brownwood Lions for 58 years and the Howard Payne University Yellow Jackets for 57 years; and
WHEREAS, his unmistakable voice, integrity, and passion for the game enriched countless Friday nights and Saturdays, leaving a lasting impact on athletes, fans, and communities across the region until his retirement from the broadcast booth in April 2021; and
WHEREAS, Dallas Huston’s excellence in broadcasting was recognized statewide when he was named Best High School Sportscaster in Texas by Texas Monthly in 1999 and honored four times as Sportscaster of the Year by the Lone Star Conference; and
WHEREAS, his contributions to high school athletics were further acknowledged through two honors from the Texas High School Coaches Association, reflecting his deep commitment to student-athletes and the spirit of competition; and
WHEREAS, his legacy has been permanently enshrined through his induction into the Howard Payne Sports Hall of Fame in 1998, the Big Country Athletic Hall of Fame in 2007, and the Gordon Wood Hall of Champions in 2012, along with receiving an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree from Howard Payne University in 2008; and
WHEREAS, beyond sports, Dallas Huston exemplified faith, leadership, and service by hosting Christian sports programs, leading a weekly men’s Bible study and fellowship, and becoming the first recipient of the Dallas Huston Christ in the Media Award presented by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes; and
WHEREAS, his character and community impact were further recognized when he was named Distinguished Citizen by the Boy Scouts of America Texas Trails Council in 2015; and
WHEREAS, in recognition of his extraordinary contributions to the game of football and sports broadcasting, Dallas Huston is being inducted into the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame as a Dave Campbell Contributor to the Game honoree.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Stephen E. Haynes, Mayor of the City of Brownwood, Texas, do hereby proclaim May 12, 2026, as
Dallas Huston Day
in the City of Brownwood and urge all citizens to join in recognizing and celebrating the life, legacy, and enduring contributions of Dallas Huston to athletics, community, and faith.
