On Friday, Congressman August Pfluger (TX-11) announced Ms. Judy Aguado Mendoza as the winner of the 2026 Congressional Art Competition in Texas’s 11th Congressional District. Ms. Mendoza is a Senior at San Saba High School. This year’s theme was ‘Celebrating America’s 250th Anniversary,’ and the winning artwork will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol building for the next year.

“I was completely blown away by the talent and creativity of so many art submissions from students across TX-11 again. This year’s theme was especially inspiring as the students used their creativity to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary and express their love of country. While it was extremely difficult to select a winner from all the incredible entries, the committee ultimately chose Ms. Judy Aguado Mendoza’s piece, “Torch of Independence”, in a blind selection process. Its impressive artistic composition, beautiful depiction of an American icon, and bold coloring made her piece stand out. Congratulations, Judy! Your artistic skill is highly impressive, and I know you will do great things to make San Saba proud in your future endeavors,” said Rep. Pfluger.

In her submission, Ms. Mendoza explained how she created the piece, stating, The piece involved major elements of color, texture, shape, and form. These were the elements that served as the base/principal that made up the piece. The minor elements were line, value, and space. These elements brought depth and gave Lady Liberty a more 3D and realistic look.”
