Lady Lions target second straight Region I-4A track and field championship in Lubbock

Kaya Phillips, Hannah Deen, and Nylah Hall are among the Brownwood girls heading to Lowery Field Friday and Saturday

The reigning Class 4A state champion Brownwood Lady Lions track and field team – fresh off a three-peat at both the district and area level – are seeking a second consecutive Region I-4A championship this weekend at Lowery Field in Lubbock.

The Lady Lions are sending 18 entrants – including 10 area champions and six-runners-up – to the meet, which has already seen its schedule revised due to the weather.

Currently, there will be no field events Friday as they have all been moved to Saturday with rain chances of better than 90 percent in the forecast for the first day of the meet. The running preliminaries, as of Thursday morning, were still set to take place Friday afternoon, though a time had not been finalized.

On Saturday, field events will begin at 8:30 a.m. with the running finals slated to start at 4 p.m. The meet is estimated to conclude around 7 p.m. Saturday, though times could again chance due to the weather.

Competing at regionals for the Lady Lions will be area champions Hannah Deen in both the long jump (17-8) and high jump (J5-5); Trinity Roberts in the discus (111-2); Nylah Hall in the triple jump (37-3); Rebekkah Delgado in the 800 meters (2:24.09); Grace Sparks in the 300-meter hurdles (46.86); Kaya Phillips in the 200 meters (23.97); the 4×100 relay of Eboni Baker, Kaya Phillips, Jade Morin, and Aniah Hines (47.49); the 4×200 relay of Nylah Hall, Jade Morin, Aniah Hines, and Kaya Phillips (1:41.43); and the 4×400 relay of Grace Sparks, Rebekkah Delgado, Hannah Deen, and Jade Morin (3:58.48).

Advancing as area runners-up were Hannah Deen in both the triple jump (36-5.75) and the 300-meter hurdles (47.52); Grace Sparks in both the pole vault (J11-6) and the 100-meter hurdles (14.8); Kaydence Allen in the shot put (35-7); and Kaya Phillips in the long jump (17-7.75).

The top four finishers in each area event qualified for regionals, and moving on after placing fourth were Jentry Coalson in the 100-meter hurdles (15.57); and Rebekkah Delgado in the 400 meters (1:00.58).

The top two finishers in each event at regionals are guaranteed a berth in the state meet Thursday, May 14 at the University of Texas at Austin. The top third place finisher from all four regions across the state will also head to Austin as the “wild card.”
